Starbucks might just be trying to cover their PR asses since on Friday Merkle went after them very specifically about suspicion that they're not paying taxes heh

True though that it typically takes a day or two before 'news' spreads enough to show effect upon stocks.

Damn... Bitches up here are worth their weight in gold (out in the bush literally, "fat is good insulator and heavy breathe" as they say.) Men outnumber women like 3:1 so the men crawl all over each other for our attention :p

remember when kids were farting on cheeseburgers and taking bites out of burgers before they left the drive thru window in the 80's? what will the refugees do to the coffee before we take them home with us?
You would have to be a fool to buy a Starbucks. It took only one Tylenol bottle in the 80s laced with poison to nearly out them out of business.

Because of this or because they are overpriced and overrated?
becuase of this and their coffe is too strong and ocerpric
Doing it for politics is your choice. Obviously the same goes for flavor preferences. I was simply curious because you said you'd never buy Starbucks coffee, not that you'd never buy it again. Obviously you've tasted it. Thanks.

Then again one does not earn a paycheck working there. We don't need those kinds of jobs. So it really is a non issue. Good riddens.

I don't know anyone who likes Starbucks coffee.
Several coworkers of mine (yes, mostly Gen Xers and Millennials) are huuuuuge fans. They run the menu too, from iced coffees to their Mocha Caramel Lattes for the same price (and calorie count!) as a McDonald's Egg McMuffin meal with coffee.

As mentioned previously, I think this entire "10,000 employees" thing is pure PR. Spread over 5 years, 10,000 newhires around the planet is a fraction of a percent. Like drinking Starbucks, it's more about appearance and marketing than realistic change.

If they're going to target a group, why not look at hiring some vets?
While I agree, there are several reasons not to do so:
1) LWers don't give a shit about vets. They just give lip service.

2) Most vets are older, more realistic and too practical to be among Starbuck's biggest customers.

3) It's a matter of PR. Even though saying "We'll hire 1,000 vets over the next 5 years" would meet applause from older, more conservative voters, the fact remains it won't affect Starbuck's sales since those same voters make their coffee at home or buy it at McD's or DD's. OTOH, making a purely PR statement dressed as a political stance that would appeal to their target customer demographic is just good business.

Who Is Starbucks' Target Audience?
Starbucks holds around 33 percent of the market share for coffee in the U.S. It sells almost as much coffee as do fast food and convenience stores combined, even though it the bulk of its consumers are in cities or upscale suburban areas. Starbucks has been able to gain such a large share of the market by catering specifically to a well-defined target audience.

Adults
Starbucks’ primary target market is men and women aged 25 to 40. They account for almost half (49 percent) of its total business. Starbucks’ appeal to this consumer age group through hip, contemporary design that is consistent in its advertising and decor, and working to keep its products current as status symbols. Customers tend to be urbanites with relatively high income, professional careers and a focus on social welfare. This target audience grows at a rate of 3 percent annually.

Young Adults
Young adults, aged 18 to 24, total 40 percent of Starbucks’ sales. Starbucks positions itself as a place college students can hang out, study, write term papers and meet people. Starbucks appeals to this consumer directly through introducing technology as soon as it comes available, focusing on social networking and actively cultivating a “cool” image. The young adult audience grows 4.6 percent each year.
