U.S power sector in 2015: More renewable Energy, Less Carbon Emissions

A new report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) has some good news for anyone who supports a greener American energy sector: 2015 will be a “transformative year” for U.S. power, as more natural gas and renewable energy will combine with fewer coal plants to create a 20-year low in U.S. power sector emissions.

“This should prove to be a watershed year for the ‘de-carbonization’ of the US power sector, with record volumes of coal-fired capacity to be shuttered, renewables capacity to be built, and natural gas to be consumed,” BNEF said in a press release, concluding that these three factors will combine to drive carbon emissions from the power sector to their lowest levels since 1994.

First, 2015 is expected to be a record-breaking year for the installation of renewable energy, with around 18 new gigawatts (GW) of power coming online from solar and wind. The previous record, set in 2012, was 17.1 GW, and most of that came from wind plants built ahead of tax credit expirations.

Going to do well once again!

Just what our economy needs, more expensive, less reliable "green energy".

no kidding. what do they care if they drive everyone's gas and electric bills so high they can't afford them. they have their visions and that's all that matters

Your own President doesn't care you will have to pay more. It's his way or freeze to death. He could care less

You people were warned before you voted for him

and sorry Mat. stinkprogess isn't exactly a stellar website known for the truth.

Years ago they got caught up a scandal for lying/fabricating a story the same as Rolling stone just did.

so just thought I'd let you know

Steph's alternate reality is interesting. To her, at least.

You can't argue with success. Unless you're a conservative, in which case you make it a point of pride to argue with success. That's why they're all arguing with the success of renewable energy here.

Weird, I don't pay more. ;) Oregon is mostly renewables.

The price of solar keeps going down and both wind & solar in the long term is far more stable price wise..

keeps going down. who can afford to retrofit their houses in this crappy economy. Just because you are doing ok doesn't mean MILLIONS of other people in this country will be.

Well, spend a little less on vino and a bit more on basics.

Wind and solar are going to become the major sources of energy for this nation, and, with the addition of deep geothermal, fossil fuel generation may well be a thing of the past in my lifetime. Not based on government edict, but based on the economics of generation.

"Enhanced Oil Recovery" created a major demand for Carbon Dioxide from Coal Power Plants. Coal fired power plants are SELLING CO2 to Oil Producers. Coal plants are gaining more revenue streams by capturing & selling CO2.
