Two-thirds of WI children can't read proficiently, despite highest per pupil spending

Why we care if the teachers come back or not is beyond me. Replace their sorry asses.

Of course what will the Union says? This is because the school districts are underfunded, teachers are underpaid and the system would work if you increase funding and get rid of the fiscal responsible members of the state legislature! What a crock of shit!

i'm tired of hearing about fat lazy tenured teachers barely able to fog up the mirror. if the good teacher's aren't willing to give up the shitty ones, then fire them all.

LMAO! Geeze, you have a source for 6.2 million teacher hires? Best worry about your own fat ass & that Green Card Mexican coming for your job.

maybe i don't have a job, because of people like you.
the kids aren't getting educated now, what's the fuckin difference ?

Yeah you make a good point. The ability is there but its not being focused correctly by the parents.

Well if by that you mean the parents aren't teaching them, you're right. Parents today work.

But at the end of the day, it's the responsibility of teachers to teach the kids reading, writing & arithmetic; and they aren't. Despite the money that is thrown hand over fist into the failing education system. We did better when we had fewer kids going to school, and teachers got paid crap wages and the school district paid their housing by having them ROTATE THROUGH THEIR HOMES.

Get rid of them and bring in new blood. The same people teaching our kids are the dumb fucks who blatantly disregard the constitution, the law, and the will of the people in government. Let's start over.

And honestly, I don't want teachers in the schools who think it's okay for doctors and employees to lie.

Nice way to mislead.

Wisconsin actually ranks about 16th in per pupil spending.

Whoa whoa whoa.

Let me get this right. These WI union teachers are falsifying gov't documents to get out of work for a week, demanding everything while earning an avg package of $89,500 a year, and 2/3 of their students can't read properly?

Wow. Enough said.

Maybe they could give the parent the money to home school and see if it improves?

Sure. There are millions of people who would love to take the place of those tenured teachers, millions who have real world experience and are probably smarter, and more disciplined, than some of those lazy tenured union teachers.

BUT....

1- They don't feel like jumping through all the certification hoops and ladders to be allowed to teach.
2- They can't get hired if the unions protect the bad teachers, thus, those openings never come up.
3- The politically correct schools would likely frown upon new blood coming in a being "mean" to the kids by, you know, making them listen, giving discipline to them, not coddling them. They'd rather have tenured teachers who go along and get along and let the cops handle problems (see below)*

*On that note, it disgusts me how schools have basically outsourced discipline to the cops. When I was in school, there weren't SRO's (School Resource Officer). For those who don't know, since Columbine happened, most schools assign a few active duty patrol cops to a school now. That cop or cops only job is to patrol the school, looking for threats. BUT the admin and teachers have abused this, and the new "Disturbing Schools" laws, which basically excuses the teachers and staff from handling discipline at all. A kid talks back? Call the cops. A kid plays a prank? Call the cops. A kid is in an argument? Call the cops. The teachers unions have now found a way to not even get out of disciplining the students they are in charge of for the day. So, can't be fired. Don't have to discipline kids. Don't really even have to show up for work. Aren't held accountable for test scores. What exactly do they do?

First off, CNS News? Seriously? Try something more credible than a right wing blog. I don't bring Huffington Post into this.

Second, teachers teach the kids to read but its up to the PARENTS AND KIDS to reinforce the reading. I have taught English and had homework where each week, they had to look up definitions and create sentences with 10 words. I had parents say that was too hard for their kids. WTF? Either we don't do that, then we get blamed that they aren't at grade level, or we do it and we are giving them too much homework.

Seriously teachers are crapped on no matter what. I can't force kids to do HOMEWORK. Its called HOMEWORK for a reason, for parents to take responsiblity for their child's education. I have at least 40% of my kids not turn in assignments and they fail and wonder why I have to call their parent in for a conference. Because you and your child are too damn lazy to do the work.

Once again, english teachers only have 2.3% of the entire week to teach english to the middle and high schoolers. Thats why we send homework, so it reinforces what we teach. Its up to the parents to take responsibility for their child's reading as well. Quit being lazy Republicans.

Bottom line: if you don't hustle your ass to the PTA to keep your local school accountable and support the good teachers....if you don't organize with other parents and make it clear to your local politico that they won't be re-elected until a better school/teacher system is set up.....if you don't tell your mayor or governor to review and FIRE incompetent school supervisors....and if YOU don't put your foot in your kids ass to straighten up and fly right, and/or HELP them with their homework, then don't come with all this "it's all the unions fault" bullshit.

Oh, and as for the headline of this thread....here's a reality check

Nationwide, only 30 percent of public school eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average reading score on the NAEP test was 262 out of 500. That’s right, the reading proficiency rate for Wisconsin eighth graders is slightly higher than the national average.

Wow, it's all the teachers fault! Amazing logic.
Teachers are just a part of the problem, but it's clear to some they don't even want to address the other aspects that are also part of the equation. And you all post the same thing! Group thought anyone?

Yup. Unions destroy everything that is good an honorable in every organization they infiltrate.

Their time has come. Buh-bye.

So what happens in WI happens on a national scale.

Suits me. Bye worthless and greedy educators. Time for a new group of people to take your place.

Yeah, wait, they infiltrated the "good and honorable" u.s. Govt?

I think much of the blame lies with the parents and technology designed for kids.
Parents let their kids lose themselves with various forms of technology so the parent doesn't have to be a parent.
Most kids are very proficient with electronics, more so than with reading, math etc by a long shot.

No, the blame lies with the teachers.

My kids are in a charter school. They have limited funds and are in a classroom for grades 1-3. They are far ahead of kids in other grades in standard public school in their reading and math proficiency, and we have all the gadgets. We just have a good system and good teachers who circumvent that.

That still doesn't put the blame on the teachers.
Charter schools typically do not have to follow the same rules and statutes that public schools must follow. Those rules and statutes for the most part are not contrived by the teachers but more so by elected officials School Board/state legislatures/US Congress ("No Child Left Behind" per example).
If the overseers of school policy were smart, they'd adopt the Charter School principles.
But again, it still comes down to good parenting to make sure the student studies at home.
Agreed but, there are many teachers out there who are PART of the problem. We can't gloss over that fact, and something has to be done about it.

The system stinks, and so do the people, who claim to want a better education for children but who REFUSE to do anything about the way business is done in our schools.

They're crooked, lying, dishonorable POS. I hope they get fired; and I hope it starts a nation-wide trend. I'd love to purge the crap teachers from our schools. But, since liberals are cowardly at heart, I don't forsee anyone else striking if they think they might REALLY lose their jobs. It's one thing to stand up for more money; it's another to RISK anything for it. Well, it's another to risk your OWN well-being for it, I should say. No risk is too great for the taxpayers and those pesky kids!

Well, so much for the argument that unions produce better teachers.
