Unnamed sources are not new. There'd have been no Watergate without "Deepthroat." The fact is that people who want to share information don't always want to be seen as the whistle-blower. Given Trump's long established history of exacting vengeance for slights real and imagined, it's no wonder people aren't speaking on the record.
Quite simply, Trump would have everyone else reveal their sources, but he does not think he should identify his sources. How do I know that? By Trump's favorite phrases:
"Many people are saying" and "sources say" are no different. Trump has used anonymous sources relentlessly. Additionally, in the private sector he was well known for requiring employees to sign NDAs, something he cannot do with Executive Branch employees. He did require that transition team members sign NDAs. Trump's issue with leaks and anonymous sources is not that they disclose information. It's that they disclose information that embarrasses him and/or shows the untruth of his own statements and implications.
A quick look at Garcetti v. Ceballos reveals that although the SCOTUS in 2006 decided that government employees can be barred from sharing work-related information with the general public, the justices agreed too that there’s a violation of one's First Amendment rights if it’s a matter of public concern and if one is speaking externally in public venues.
The fact of the matter is that Trump cannot stand that claims he makes can be verified and later found to be inaccurate. The man thinks he should have uncontested pontifical infallibility. If that's what he wants, he should have run for Pope, not President.
