Unnamed sources are not new. There'd have been no Watergate without "Deepthroat." The fact is that people who want to share information don't always want to be seen as the whistle-blower. Given Trump's long established history of exacting vengeance for slights real and imagined, it's no wonder people aren't speaking on the record.

Quite simply, Trump would have everyone else reveal their sources, but he does not think he should identify his sources. How do I know that? By Trump's favorite phrases:

"Many people are saying" and "sources say" are no different. Trump has used anonymous sources relentlessly. Additionally, in the private sector he was well known for requiring employees to sign NDAs, something he cannot do with Executive Branch employees. He did require that transition team members sign NDAs. Trump's issue with leaks and anonymous sources is not that they disclose information. It's that they disclose information that embarrasses him and/or shows the untruth of his own statements and implications.

A quick look at Garcetti v. Ceballos reveals that although the SCOTUS in 2006 decided that government employees can be barred from sharing work-related information with the general public, the justices agreed too that there’s a violation of one's First Amendment rights if it’s a matter of public concern and if one is speaking externally in public venues.

The fact of the matter is that Trump cannot stand that claims he makes can be verified and later found to be inaccurate. The man thinks he should have uncontested pontifical infallibility. If that's what he wants, he should have run for Pope, not President.

Yep, it's typical DICKtator bullshit.

My God, I have never seen another liberal in desperate need of a high school civics course more than you!

When will you finally get out of middle school, so you can learn how this works?

Which would differentiate him significantly from Obama's constant references to non-secific "folks" saying this or that?

It's a common straw man argument that every politician engages in. Quit acting like this started with Cheeto Jesus.

Trump has only been in office for a freaking month. How does he have a "long established history of exacting vengence for slights real and imagined"? The Clinton's aren't ancient history. Hillary headed up the legendary "bimbo eruption squad" that lefties giggled about. The intent of course was to intimidate, threaten and punish victims of her husband's sexual abuse. People died during the Clinton administration. Vince Foster allegedly shot himself in the head and then dragged his own corpse to an obscure park on the outskirts of Washington without his car keys. Admiral Borda allegedly shot himself in the head in a dispute over a device on one of his battle ribbons. Clinton's federal police botched a raid on an obscure religious sect in Waco Texas and 80 men women and children were incinerated in an assault with tanks and poison gas that wouldn't be tolerated in Afghanistan. The left wasn't in the least bit curious.

His whole career has demonstrated his need to punish people. He let his son in law punish Christie and Guilani.

So, whitehall, you are saying Trump should be like Clinton?

Pontifical infallibility? There is no such thing. He's where God wants him to be. The oval office. Don't sweat the small stuff. The pope puts his pants on the same way the rest of us do. He's a sinner in need of salvation (which comes through Jesus Christ alone) and therein "fallible" just so you know...

One day God is going to let us know exactly who was who and what they did and won't that be a day? I have the feeling it is going to far, far worse than we ever imagined, Whitehall. Far worse. To think that there are people in this country that refuse to believe the Clinton's have done these things amazes me. To see them treat Trump as if he is Hitler incarnate while overlooking Hillary Clinton's crimes convinces me that many in this country have gone mad. Completely mad.

Your Op-ed reveals your immaturity. There are far greater concerns right now such as the thread HaShev posted yesterday about OFA. That would be considered a "real threat."

Trump has only been in office for a freaking month. How does he have a "long established history of exacting vengence for slights real and imagined"?

Where have you been for the past 25 years? Do you think Donald Trump didn't talk prior to January 20, 2017?

It's not a matter of whether he’s vengeful. All that remains to be seen is how willing he is to use his power as POTUS to exact revenge."

What about Bill and Hillary Clinton and the list of over 40 people who worked for them or were somehow connected to them mysteriously dying. What about that kind of getting even? Any comment on that one or do the Clinton's get a pass in your world?

Look. You wrote....
His whole career? He's only been in office for a month and a few days, Jake. What are you talking about??
....and I indulged you (and the other member) with a litany of examples, most in Trump's own words, that show the man has a long record of vengeance. The fact of the matter is that Trump's proclivity for exacting revenge is not the topic of the thread, but I did make the claim that the man has a long record of pursuing vengeance, so I provided ample evidence of the validity of that claim.

Now, rather than simply admitting that you weren't aware of his long track record re: vengeance, or perhaps just saying you were mistaken thinking he had no such record, you present a faulty comparison, presumably to try to force me into a defensive position about the Clintons, people who have nothing to do with the thread topic and to drive the thread off topic.

This thread is about:
  • the press' quoting anonymous sources when reporting information they have obtained about Trump and his Administration's words, deeds and thoughts;
  • Donald Trump's own words, deeds and thoughts with regard to source anonymity, and
  • how, when and whether Trump's position regarding anonymous sources is consistent or not consistent with his personal use of anonymous sources.
I welcome and look forward to seeing your on-topic comments.

One, the Clinton stuff is nonsense. Two, the question to my statement has fallen apart. Three, he certainly does not live by "forgive my trespasses, even as I forgive others who trespass against me."
