President estimated Germany’s under-spend on alliance over the past 12 years, then added interest.

The controversial President is said to have had an 'invoice' printed out outlining the sum estimated by his aides as covering Germany's unpaid contributions for defence. Said to be presented during private talks in Washington, the move has been met with criticism from German and Nato officials.

While the figure presented to the Germans was not revealed by either side, Nato countries pledged in 2014 to spend two per cent of their GDP on defence, something only a handful of nations – including the UK, Greece, Poland and Estonia – currently do. But the bill has been backdated even further to 2002, the year Mrs Merkel’s predecessor, Gerhard Schröder, pledged to spend more on defence.

Mr Trump reportedly instructed aides to calculate how much German spending fell below two per cent over the past 12 years, then added interest. Estimates suggest the total came to £300bn, with official figures citing the shortfall to be around £250bn, and with £50bn in interest added on.

Germany is not prepared to be responsible for their own defense.

They are ungrateful children, criticizing and attacking those who they depend on for their personal safety and well being.

And Trump, calling them on it, is the problem in your moronic eyes? LOL!!!

What a buffoon. I'm surprised he had it printed instead of having Bannon write it out in crayon.

My post gave you the respect of seriously addressing your point.

YOu post completely failed to address my point. It was merely some Russian bashing with some "red baiting" thrown in.

My point stands.

From YOUR link.

"In its recent annual report, NATO estimated that Germany spent 1.2% of its GDP on defense in 2016,"

To help you connect that dots, 1.2 is LESS Than 2.

Thus, Germany is not meeting their spending obligations for their own defense.

It's so ignorant of you to call someone "moronic" when it is clear that you have no understanding of how NATO works and the role of the member countries.

The UNITED STATES is the moronic one here. There is no billing of one nation by another for their defense, that's just plain ignorance and it's inexcuseable on Trump's part.

The US wanted bases in Germany after WWII to keep Russia at bay, and to ensure that Germany was never in a position to threaten world peace again. The other members of NATO wanted Germany fully disarmed and rendered toothless given that Germany started both WWI and WWII. For centuries the Germans have been an aggressively militaristic country. The Allies tried to disarm Germany after WWI but then the Communists took over Russia, and began try to encourage other European nations to throw off their feudal systems of government and give power to the people. A strong Germany was much less frightening than a Communist Russia.

Nobody forced the US to outspend every other nation on earth or to wage wars all over the world. These are decisions Americans made on their own. Americans have frequently involved themselves in conflicts in the Middle East to protect the flow of oil from the OPEC States to the US, but since Obama has made the US pretty much energy self-sufficient, there is no good or valid reason to keep getting sucked into wars over there.

There are good and valid reasons for people from Middle Eastern countries to hate the US, having nothing to do with religion. Since World War II, the United States has propped up some of the most despotic right wing dictators in the Middle East in an effort to keep the Soviets out of the Middle East, and from endangering "US Interests" there.

What the US spends on it's military is your own business - it is your tax dollars after all. But don't blame US military expenses on your NATO obligations. It is the US desire for world domination that has fueled your out of control military spending. The rest of the world should be billing you for the refugee mess you've inflected on us with your endless wars over there.

Need I remind your that the US made this mess, displacing millions of people, and now expect the rest of the world to pay for it. Germany's bill to you more than makes up for any shortfall in building up their own military.

I understand that Trump was not seriously trying to get Germany to pay that invoice, that it was a prop to make a point.

I understand that Germany is not paying their fair share of their OWN DEFENSE, as they have agreed to do.

Germany is not spending their fair share for their OWN DEFENSE.

That you found a German that thinks that is cool, does not support your position, at all.

Do you understand the fact that some one agreeing with you, is not "evidence" or even a supporting argument?
