Just this morning.
This will come as a surprise to most on the Right, who love to belittle France.

I respect France and their contribution to liberty to be honest. Recall the French Revolution and how important that was for individual liberty. They were the strongest ally to America in it's birth and these principles remain strong in both countries.

I know there is some global competition, and the French don't hide their position as a "free agent" in global investment. Most nations are like this however, but others just hide it. In the end, America has an ally in France who have a reputation of getting things done through diplomacy. Just the partner America needs at this time.

Oh, and yes, the French have a strong military and use it far more often than people know.

The French are made fun of for being French. They can be quite annoying but in general have been good allies to the US and the rest of Western Europe.

The whole "french can't fight" thing comes from their piss poor 6 week performance during the Battle of France in 1940.

That was the result of a tired military that relied on old tactics and a Maginot Line that Germany simply avoided. They attacked through the rough terrain that none believed they would attempt. Furthermore, France didn't have the political Will to fight, they had lost a generation already and leadership was inept at best.

What is ironic of course is that it was the French leadership who were the most demanding of German reparations which created great animosity and resentment. Thankfully there was a very strong French Resistance during the occupation and many were saved by the British across the Channel to continue to fight for the Allied Forces.

Anyways, the point is of course that the French were defeated so quickly for a number of reasons and the British in particular experienced the brunt of this failure to defend France.

It didn't help that Petain was picked to lead the rump Vichy state, and he was by that time a very authoritarian personality.

They still have issues when it comes to dealing with some of their populations collaborating, it's still a sore topic for many.

People forget that they held on for 4 years of World War I, bearing the brunt of the fighting, and basically ran roughshod over Europe During the Napoleonic Wars.

US President Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the United Nations in New York.

Macron, who had hosted Trump for France’s Bastille Day celebrations, told the president the French people were proud to have him and his wife visit.

Trump told Macron he was so impressed with the display of military might on Bastille Day, he wants to hold one on July 4 on Pennsylvania Ave.

“To a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington down Pennsylvania Avenue,” Trump said before the pair began a bilateral meeting in New York.

Trump praised the display of French “military might” as “tremendous” and “beautiful.”
