Trump was in position to actually pull it off until that first debate. His problem was that it was 90 minutes long, and he could only fill maybe half that with immigration, trade, blacks are running rampant and she's bad. After that he was fact checked to death. And, then he faced taking actual questions in the next two debates ... one the unpredictable town hall format.

So, he was going to play the bimbo card. Many women have affairs with married men, but most have the good judgment/taste to keep them private. Bill's past shows he lacks good judgment. Team Hillary went pre-emptive. Then Trump played the rape card. And Team Hillary reacted.
