It is actually global trade and modern forms of mercantilism.

Even Bernie Sanders who will refer to himself as a democratic socialist models his views off of economies where the means of production are owned by private parties and the economies are not planned.

If you want to use the term socialism to describe the political platform of "progressives" in the US then that is fine. The problem is when you then try and use the word socialism to compare the progressive platform to all forms of socialism ever conceived throughout history.

Great effort has been made by fascist and corporatist through manipulation of the Tea Party to demonized various levels of socialism in a capitalist system. To these ends they have related all forms of socialism to communism and the evil empires of the USSR and Red China, ignoring and misleading facts and reality. That is why today so many relate socialism to progressives and progressives communist, etc. Meantime, self proclaimed experts have no clue about what these terms actually mean and represent.

There is a major issue with that as pseudo communism is socialism. In that sense everybody is mandated to "work" Everybody carries an identification booklet including their personal data: DOB, mother's maiden name, highest education, EMPLOYMENT, residence..etc.
Cops (the oppressive force) have the right to stop you anywhere, any time without rhyme or reason. They verify your current employment. If you are not employed, you have three months to get a job. If you don't, they will "employ" you within the prison system as a convict and you will be working to support your incarceration expense.

Perhaps the confusion comes from countries having factions of socialism in their capitalist systems. A country that owns and has socialized energy production such as hydro electric dams built on a river owned by the state does not make it a socialist country. In other works, socialism has successfully blended into capitalism where private monopolies of specific industries and services are unreasonable and unwise.

I don't think the goal of "progressives" is actual socialism or communism; as I understand it, it's a social democracy such as Germany or Sweden. My guess is that this is what Bernie Sanders would want, and he has actually said so recently. Good for him, he's a straight shooter.

The problem is that when I ask they usually get catty or nasty and won't answer my direct question.

I do think it's a worthy conversation to have.
