Because the “Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy” march in the parade. This is a historical society and I have worked with them in the past. They give out scholarships and awards to students. CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Images of a flag burning incident at Marion Square in downtown Charleston over the weekend has ignited controversy across social media platforms.

DeRay McKesson, a civil rights activist with WeTheProtesters.org, posted photos and video on his Twitter page Sunday showing a group of people in Marion Square burning the American and Confederate flags.

WeTheProtesters lists McKesson as a member of its planning team, and the Founder and Co-Editor of the Ferguson Protester Newsletter.

Here at USMB, almost like clockwork there will be threads claiming that the Democrat Party is the party of slavery.
Why? Because when the Confederacy tried to leave the Union, most of the politicians were Democrats. Of course when the Right makes this claim they try not to say 'Confederate" and Democrat in the same sentence- so that they can still support the Confederacy- but still blame Democrats for slavery.

I personally do not have a problem with recognizing the historic reality that was the Confederacy. But you can't 'honor' the Confederacy without recognizing that the Confederacy was established specifically to ensure that the slave holders of those states would keep their slaves into perpetuity. That was the 'States Rights' issue.


It is no mistake that the Confederate Constitution specifically addresses slavery

Article I Section 9(4)
No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.[14]

The Confederacy was established to protect the rights of slave owners. There is more to the Confederacy than that- but I get why African Americans might have a different point of view about the Confederacy than those whose ancestors were never slaves.

I think that the law that implemented FISA warrants is a bad law and should be thrown out- but I felt that way before Trump was a candidate for President.
Note that Republicans- and Trump- have done nothing to dismantle FISA.
