Today's Greek Tragedy

We aren't like Greece at all as I explained. Our problems are tax cuts for the rich and military spending. We have a debt problem and the people don't even get anything.

According to the Heritage Foundation, non SS and Medicare entitlements (Welfare, Medicaid) were greater in 2014 than military spending and that doesn't include state and local social spending:

budget-entitlement-programs-680.jpg

So most people don't get anything until they are retirement age. Does military spending keep increasing?

Do you think eliminating the estate tax will help us balance the budget?

You cant keep raising taxes to cover overspending.
And a death tax is about as disgusting as it gets.

You can't keep decreasing taxes and expect to get a balanced budget.

Cut spending!!!! Just like every damn household in America has to do when they run into financial problems.

That will make little difference when tax breaks are being given to the richest.

Meanwhile, in Greece:
Greek ministers have launched a concerted effort to persuade European officials to release more bailout money (as the government runs out of cash) while at the same time unilaterally reneging on the austerity measures agreed to during previous concerted efforts to persuade European officials to release more bailout money. Brilliant ... fuckin' brilliant.
Socialism kills brain cells.

A new law proposed by the leftwing Syriza-led government and passed Tuesday night opens the way to rehire thousands of workers cut loose from the country’s inefficient public sector in a reform enacted by the previous government.

In today's episode, Greece announced that their decision to renege on the existing loan arrangement is non-negotiable while insisting they be given more money! "When you negotiate, there should be mutual concessions..." said spokesman Gabriel Sakellardidis which in Greek must mean that only the creditors must make concessions.
As exhibited by this board's comrades and Greece's current gov't, socialists are indeed brain dead creatures:

The Greek government will stick to the "red line" promises it made to its electorate and not make concessions in negotiations with creditors, it said.
Spokesman Gabriel Sakellaridis told the press in Athens that labour and pension issues are non negotiable...
"When you negotiate, there should be mutual concessions."
Some creditors, notably Germany, are losing patience with what they see as Greece's profligacy.

Have republicans here given up on eliminating the estate tax? Or are they still not serious about balancing the budget.

And that means what, exactly, as regards the GST (Greek Socialist Tragedy) and their imminent economic collapse?

Well we aren't very socialist and yet have debt problems. I guess you don't need to be socialist.

Most nations have debt problems but most are not careening at high speed toward insolvency. When rational states see the end is near they take evasive action. The Greeks - in electing a socialist gov't - hit the gas pedal.

Why the big interest in stealing other peoples money?

The interest is balancing the budget. Not serious about it if they are giving tax breaks to the richest. They are hitting the gas pedal as you say. Who would think repubs would be so similar to Greek politicians.

Not stealing peoples hard earned money is hardly a tax break.
You want to work six months rather than four before you get to keep any of your money?
Maybe you should be as generous with your own money before you call for the theft of others.

Proof you aren't fiscally responsible. You can't balance the budget with tax breaks.

You prefer they tax the living more rather than dead millionaires? I don't see how that is any better.

Thats like saying your going to go out and rack up a bunch of credit card debt so you dont have to file bankruptcy.
Stop spending so much.

I'd call that taxation without representation.
Since it's kinda hard to represent a dead guy and all.

So you think someone can pay off their credit card debt by quitting their job then?

Then cut it when the debt is gone. Till then better to tax rich dead people than the living.

You did. You think we can balance a budget with tax cuts.

Meanwhile, back to Greece:
Faced with mounting debt and a newly minted socialist gov't, Greece's bright young minds are choosing to leave their homeland.

This may be Greece s biggest brain drain since the death of Socrates - MarketWatch
A devastating brain drain is luring away the best and brightest of Greece’s workforce, several reports showed, with estimates varying between 180,000 and 200,000 well-educated citizens leaving the cash-strapped nation.
In other words, Greece is losing its “youngest, best and brightest,” as a European University Institute study dated March 2014 noted.
According to the study, of those who have left 88% hold a university degree, and of those, over 60% have a master's degree, while 11% hold a Ph.D.
According to the EUI report, 79% of those who left Greece during the crisis were actually employed but felt that there was “no future” in the country (50%) or no professional opportunities (25%).
