Fake News: Iconic Crying Migrant Girl Never Separated from Mother, Says Father

The father of the tearful two-year-old Honduran migrant girl who became the face of the “family separation” news coverage says that his young daughter was never actually separated from her mother when caught by U.S. Border Patrol.


Instead, he says, his daughter and her mother are together in U.S. custody at “at a family residential center in Texas.”

Moreover, the mother had been deported from the U.S. in 2013, according to a statement given by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to Buzzfeed on Thursday evening.

Denis Javier Varela Hernandez, 32, told the UK Daily Mail that his wife Sandra, 32, had taken their daughter, Yanela Denise, on a dangerous journey to the U.S. on June 3 without telling him. They had since been in touch, he said, and he learned the two had been detained together but never separated.

Yanela Denise became an iconic symbol of opposition to the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, under which adults who cross the border illegally are prosecuted. As a result, children traveling with migrant adults are often taken to shelters separately until they can be reunited with their parents, a family member, or a sponsor.

Getty Images photographer John Moore took the famous photograph of Yanela Denise standing on the ground and looking up in tears while a McAllen, Texas, Border Patrol agent searched her mother next to a patrol vehicle.

The image spread like a California grassfire. Time Magazine used a cutout of the little girl on its recent cover, where she was depicted confronting President Donald Trump.

Multiple news outlets used the photograph as a symbol of the pain of families being separated by U.S. government officials. A Facebook fundraiser that used the photograph to solicit funds to help reunite families has already raised nearly $20 million, becoming the single largest crowdfunding campaign in the history of the social media platform.

Where are the raises for working class Americans? Where are the jobs the tax cuts are supposed to create?

Trump has trade wars going on with 7 different countries. Any general knows that you can’t win wars with multiples fronts. The troops are spread too thin.

They held a job fair at the White House last week. Turnover remains high and no one is applying. No one wants to ruin their life and future career prospects by working for the Trump White House.

Trump completely changed the Obama economy. His massive tax cuts and deregs have brought a booming economy. Opening up oil production and exploration was also contrary to Obama. Trump's economy has erased Obama. Even black Americans are calling Obama the first mulatto president.

The booming economy began in 2010 and has continued unabated. Job creation has SLOWED under President Trump, not increased. Obama increased oil and gas production and made the US energy independent.

With the exception of the tax cuts, which should never have happened, and are going to destroy your economy, everything else is due to President Obama.

And eliminating regulations did nothing for job creation. Job creation is down by more than 30,000 jobs per month in 2017, over 2016.

Health insurance premiums are about to go up massively. Gas prices are WAY up. Working families were promised big raises from the tax cuts but that didn’t happen. Companies used the money to buy back stocks. Less than 5% of workers received raises or bonuses.

Trump is riding Obsma’s economic coattails, taking credit for Obama’s job creation and stock market.

And here’s a clue: when the government cuts taxes and then goes on a massive spending spree like Trump did, it makes the economy look really good. Like putting a push up bra, a new hairdo and a makeup job on an ugly woman. You’re fooled for a while but eventually you’ll sober up and she’ll take off the makeup and you’ll be left with this ugly old hag you were tricked into thinking was young and beautiful.

On Thursday, the Associated Press reported on federal court filings regarding the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center in Virginia. Those court filings allege that children “as young as 14” were subjected to near-tortuous conditions, including being “locked up for long periods in solitary confinement, left nude and shivering in concrete cells.” It gets worse. Here’s one account, from a 15-year-old Honduran detainee:

Whenever they used to restrain me and put me in the chair, they would handcuff me. Strapped me down all the way, from your feet all the way to your chest, you couldn’t really move. ... They have total control over you. They also put a bag over your head. It has little holes; you can see through it. But you feel suffocated with the bag on.

The Associated Press corroborated stories of brutality with a former child-development specialist who worked in the facility, and said that she saw minor detainees with “bruises and broken bones they blamed on guards.” The AP continues:

Many of the children were sent there after U.S. immigration authorities accused them of belonging to violent gangs, including MS-13. President Donald Trump has repeatedly cited gang activity as justification for his crackdown on illegal immigration.
