This is the LAST STRAW...i.e. the exaggeration, the lack of common sense!

Seattle bans plastic straws, utensils, becoming first major US city to do so
The National Park Service estimates 500 million straws are used by Americans each day.

So the USA Today REPEAT this 9 years old totally wrong statistic and cities are citing these statistics as validation for banning straws!

EXCEPT REALITY!!!!!

Then upon further source validation you find the largest straw manufacturer of the 14 US manufacture produces 22 million straws a day.
The largest produces 22 million a day... Produces! Not consumes but Makes!

Here is the annual production of D&W also holds the title as the largest drinking straw manufacturer in North America, says Clay Davis, senior vice president.
The company churns out 22 million straws a day – roughly 3,000 cases – in the Fountain Inn plant alone, distributing throughout the U.S. and Canada. D&W Fine Pack’s customers include food powerhouses such as Sysco, U.S. Foods and many national chain restaurants as well as school systems across the country

Now there are 14 manufacturers of straws and the above says they are the largest.

OK>>>>>
Multiple 22 million straws per day times 14 manufacturers equals
ONLY 306 million per day MANUFACTURED
....NOT CONSUMED!

A FAR smaller number than 500 million and remember the MSM and Seattle and USAToday said CONSUMED!

Makes no sense.

You do not really understand how manufacturing works do you? They make enough to cover what they sell and a small amount more. If they were not being consumed at that rate ,they would not be making them at that rate.

Also, did you miss this part...22 million straws a day – roughly 3,000 cases – in the Fountain Inn plant alone,

Yes, it does. Manufactured is identical to consumed because all straws are one-time use.

Let's get rid of straws and also plastic bags. Sooner is better. I'm up for it.

NO it is NOT the same! How many straws are in the packages in the stores right now?
How many straws in your house? RIGHT NOW???
For example in McDonalds' alone every day there are left over every night a number of STRAWS! NOT consumed!
With over 50,000 fast food places each having say 1,000 straws left over from night to night that means there are 50 million straws NOT consumed!

WRONG WRONG WRONG.
You can get a stainless steel straw and travel utensils to keep in the glove compartment or in your purse if you're a lady. You can survive this. It should have happened a long time ago.

Would you rather have an unused sanitary straw or suck on one that has been lying around in a nasty germ-filled glove compartment or purse?

I see herpes and meningitis in your future.

The "plastic patch" in the Pacific is the size of Texas.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a collection of plastic, floating trash halfway between Hawaii and California, has grown to more than 600,000 square miles, a study published Thursday found. That's twice the size of Texas.
Now let's assume there are say 6 gyres... Gyres are large systems of circulating ocean currents, kind of like slow-moving whirlpools like Pacific.. and contains the same size, i.e.
600,000 square miles or 3,600,000 square miles of the oceans.
How many square miles of Oceans are there? he oceans cover 141,600,000 square miles, or 72% of the earth's surface. www.reefnews.com/reefnews/infopage/oceans/ocean.html
what percent of square miles have garbage based on 3.6 million square miles? 2.5%! Wow... let's get excited!
I'm excited. I don't know why you're not. Are you a plastics manufacturer's heir?

Now you are pulling at straws!
I guess with 97.5% of the oceans NOT having a problem I can't get too excited as I'm 100% confident that unicorns exist and brilliant alternatives like what Starbucks has found will prevail calmer and more common sense behavior.
Starbucks cups are not recyclable, which means 4 billion go to landfill each year

Probably not, Oldy, just a knee-jerk against 'Regulation', the idea that the Govt should interfere with the Corporations' march to higher profits, regardless of the damage being done to our children's future.

You never going to win against the Big Straw Industrial Complex.

Just look at the Crazy Straw Corp and thier evil ways. Children are their main market fer fecks sake.

Yup.. you are right. So let's say then being just as expansive as the 9 year old boy was that this company manufacturers 44 million and the other 13 manufactures half that. I can do that as these are all hypothetical right? So between the 44 million and the 143 million the other 13 plants do that still is less then 200 million straws. I'm as close as the 9 year old kid who called the manufacturers who SAID THEY produce and he converted it to CONSUMED!

Why just straws?? Let's rid ourselves of poopy baby diapers!

Whatever... the point is all this angst and handwringing over a number triggered by a 9 year old boy in 2011 who called a handful of manufacturers and they told him some numbers that produced... NOT consumed... and these numbers are now cast in concrete as the numbers of straws CONSUMED per day. A far different answer... But in this age of unicorns, and exaggerations with the MSM the few of us with common sense just have to pat you on your pointed heads and let you fret and tantrumize the situations.

Why just straws?? Let's rid ourselves of poopy baby diapers!
Well frankly Kat.... the PP is working on that with 323,999 abortions were performed in 2014, according to the organization.Aug 1, 2017
Once more a solution is at hand! Way to go Kat... you have been promoted to the head of the class!

Either way though, that is a shit ton of straws

Actually a plastic straw weighs..
about one sixty-seventh of an ounce or .42 gramsScience Says: Amount of straws, plastic pollution is huge
So let's agree 300 million straws a day or 4,446,012 oz or 277,876 lbs or 126 METRIC tons per day or 46,018 METRIC tons.
So how many tons do the experts say per year?

Well experts tell us that Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastics enter our ocean Plastics in the Ocean - Ocean Conservancy
Hmmm plastic straws assuming 300 million a day make up a little more than 0.58% of the 8 million metric tons.......
Is that a big deal or what???

I do not agree with the law, but I do try and not use straws myself very often, only if I get a drink with a lid.

Every little bit helps
