We are not in SK to stop NK from invading, that is just dumb.

Our reasons for being there have 100 times more to do with China than NK.

I do not know what percent they pay now, but I do not doubt that they could and maybe should pay a bit more.

But he is not asking for a bit more, he is asking for 200 to 400% increases overnight.

I know that next you people will rant on about "art of the deal" and "best negotiator ever", but that is all bull-crap. Put your house on the market for 3 times the appraised value and see if you get many takers even willing to start a negotiation.

Neither Japan nor SK are ran by stupid people. What if they call Trump's bluff, will Trump pull all the troops out? Even if he choose to do so, the act of doing so would take longer than he has left in office, even if he wins a 2nd term. We are looking at 70,000 or or so troops and all accompanying equipment. We do not have anywhere in the US that can handle that many people and their equipment.

You have to also keep in mind that our presence in both places is not fully supported by their people, especially Japan and the island of Okinawa.

All parties in both S. Korea and Japan have common strategic interests............All sides are allies against China and N. Korea............and might I add.........RUSSIA..........Vladigaskov...............Naval base.

They need us there to deter aggression.........because if they attack them they attack us........So it is for their benefit as well................

They get a bunch of money from our forces being there..........not much to ask to spend more for doing so.........our leaving would hurt them financially far more than us anyways.

We protect South Korea because it is in our National Security Interest to do so. We don't do it as an act of charity. Defense of South Korea is the responsibility of both nations given the threat that exist from North Korea and China. We want South Korean dollars to go towards keep their economy and military strong because that helps the United States in defending the country from China and North Korea. A stronger South Korea enhances the ability of the United States to successfully help defend it from North Korea and China.

Call it what you will but is it the same "reason" the military of the United States is deployed in more than 150 countries around the world, with over 170,000 of its active-duty personnel serving outside the United States and its territories.?

It is a dual purpose..............Especially in S. Korea.........with the Dragon next door..........

Any attack there would be a direct attack against the United States.........And China knows this......

In regards to Japan.......it is strategic ........both for China And Russia........Vladigaskov is a choke point for Russia

Trump is pointing out that we pay the Lion's share for it all over the world.........while many bases are strategic in Nature against potential advisaries.......other countries spend less on their military because WE ARE THERE..........Which is the point.............

Trump is a business man and he's trying to shift some of the cost on to allies..........Nothing wrong with that........because we have to borrow the money to do so.........
