Interesting history to these bullet-point "Cannots". You can read the story here, but I'll post the "Cannots":

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence.
And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

Just so happens that #s 1, 6, and 8 are very pertinent to the post below. The nice thing about Conservatism is that you don't have to change the story every couple of weeks, or decades. That's why Conservative values are called the Permanent Things.

It's also why John Boehner is NOT a Conservative.

The tea party needs to change their name to the Straw Men, because that's all they're good at.

You cannot get through life thinking that absolutes exist without absolutely failing.

let me get this straight: you believe there are no absolutes?

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

Who discourages thrift?

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

Really? That's what Ronald Reagan essentially did by challenging the Soviet Union to keep up with our defense spending. How did that work out?

You cannot help little men by tearing down big men.

Sure you can. As kids, we all saw that happen when the playground bully was beaten to a pulp.

You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

What do you mean by "pulling down the wage payer?" If you mean forcing him to relinquish a little more of the JOINT profit, I'd say you're wrong.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

Agreed. But, the obvious implication here has to do with tax rates and taxing the rich more WILL help the poor. Might as well do it as they're not taking care of the poor themselves, are they? If you think they are, why do we still have poor?

You cannot establish sound security on borrowed money.

"Sound security?" What does that mean?

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

Agreed.

You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.

"Trouble?" Not necessarily. If I owe my bookie more money than I've got, a judicious loan will keep me out of trouble with him...won't it?

You cannot build character and courage by destroying men’s initiative and independence.

Character and courage have nothing to do with those. Show me I'm wrong.

And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they can and should do for themselves.

True enough. As the old saw goes, "It's better to teach a man how to fish than to give him fish," but you've got to get him off square one first. If he's hungry, give him a fish first and THEN teach him to fish.

That's why Conservative values are called the Permanent Things.

And, liberalism is impermanent? Proof, please.

It's also why John Boehner is NOT a Conservative.

Yes, and thank God for that! Maybe there's a chance for a deal which will move the country forward, not backward to the Guilded Age of the Robber Barons.

Not as far as groups of humans go, no there are not. We attempt to find truth but even the greatest truth is a matter of opinion and continually subject to revision. Absolute truths are the tools of preachers and con men and only fools believe in them.
