The pharmaceutical industry defends the price spikes as a means of funding research to develop new drugs. But a close look at the finances of more than a dozen public drug companies illustrates research and development expenses are routinely smaller than company overheads, including marketing costs. And often after-tax profits still greatly exceed those R&D expenses that the companies say are so high.

Corporate America! What a joke.

They control those in government that pass the bills.
And with Citizens United! Watch out.

Our anti-trust laws have been so watered down that the corporate world can get away with a lot. They're the most greedy sob's on the planet.

Are you saying drug companies make money? Outrageous!!!

Reason's obvious enough: if everyone has to have medical insurance, then typically an insurance company is footing the bill. So prices can be exorbitant since the prices aren't as obvious as if everyone had to pay out of pocket. If insurance were optional or didn't exist and bills were given directly to patients, drug companies would be burnt to the ground in protest.

Do you really believe this is a new concept that the pharmaceutical companies just started practicing?
Is that your contention? If it is, wake up.

God forbid someone goes through the trouble of inventing, marketing, and distributing drugs that help people live better lives, in exchange for a profit.

If you want to bitch about something drug companies do, how about the fact that they market psycodrugs for every sort of bad day and that every mass shooter I'm aware of was prescribed some of that shit.

I have my beefs with the industry, but the mere fact they make a profit isn't it.

What drug companies also don't want you to know is that they benefit enormously from basic research done at universities with grant money from the federal government. That's YOUR money, but they'd have you believe they're footing the entire bill themselves.

are you saying that companies dealing with the public interest should be unfettered?

WOW! No one is making a statement they shouldn't make a profit. It's how the make it and how they rip people off. One time understand the difference.

Yep. Often one company will take over smaller companies that have paid for the research and then try to make claim that it was their own research.

High prices aren't new, but they're aren't readily apparent either. Need to request medical bills, don't hand ya one leaving a medical office. Bill's going to the insurance company, not to us. Conseuqently the ridiculously high prices aren't known to most people. Might be paying $50 per aspirin at some hospitals and never even know it. Price per night ~25 years ago at a hospital I was working security at was like $400/night and these were just a bed and tiny tv, not even private.

If people aren't aware how much they're paying they wont compalin. And that's why it is the way it is. Insurance pays it, not you.

Hospitals are committing fraud against the tax payers of this country. People need to go to prison and new laws need to be put into place that they can't do this.

"In Maryland, the average hospital adjusted expenses per inpatient day is $2,368, while similar services will set you back only $1,141 in South Dakota and $2,967 in Oregon."

My advice is if it isn't life-threatening suck it up. Made the mistake of going to an urgent care center here years back for a probable kidney stone, which it was. After being told what I'd self-diagnosed myself with I had a $1200 bill for some diagnostics, a saline IV to hydrate, and a 10 dose Rx of Percoset.

What liberals don't want you to know is that drug companies pay taxes on their filthy profits.

Buying smaller companies? Why is that allowed in America?
We need Bernie to put a stop to this, NOW!!!

It isn't a question of it being allowed. However, patenting something that you didn't create blows chow. It's a problem with our current little trade agreement. I know........you aren't geared for these types of conversations.
