Alinsky always advocated the use of ridicule as an effective tool. Why would we need ridicule? It certainly wouldn't be to prove something that's already false....false. So ridicule exists primarily to counter the truth. It is an effective tool because humans as social creatures care a whole hell of a lot more than we admit about what our fellow man thinks. In fact we care enough to invent entire systems of control to force our thoughts on other people. When that doesn't work ridicule is handy as a plan B and also as a pseudo enforcement tool. So when you see nervous laughter icons following your posts you can be fairly certain that you've touched on a truth someplace that someone doesn't like.
