While throughout US history there had been times of segregation and lack of segregation depending on the situation, it was Executive order 9981 that said that discrimination would no longer be allowed in the military, and that was a Democrat, not a Republican who wrote that order.

The big moments for ending discrimination legally were:

Exec order 8802 - (prohibit racial discrimination in DOD), FDR-Dem

Exec order 9981 -("It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin.")

Ended Montford Point (black Marine Bootcamp) and set a committee to make recommendations on how to implement the policy. Order was written by Truman (Democrat). People like Kenneth Royall (sec of Army) were forced out for refusing to desegregate the Army by Truman. Eisenhower kept enforcing Truman's order and completed the end of desegregated units.

Directive 2120.30 -Armed forces Directive to oppose discriminatory businesses working with the military (especially housing for military members that discriminated). Sec of Def under JFK and LBJ (Democratic party).
