It is so ironic... all this talk in the Catholic Church (novus ordo variety) about Synods and getting to know what the Catholic people want or need from the Church!

Why didn't they do this kind of thing before convening the Vatican II Council, so - called?

The clergy would have heard such things as:

Hell no, I don't want the altar dismantled and made to look like a kitchen table! Are you nuts?

and

Hell no, I don't want the priest facing the congregation! He is supposed to be facing GOD!
