Seems to me one of the biggest problems is that so many RW mouthpieces vave done such a good job drilling into so many people's heads the notion that taxes and just about everything associated with government are bad. At the same time, though, there are a lot of public services those same people take for granted which the pols they vote for know they would miss, so they don't cut those services, but they don't raise any taxes, either, since both options are politically unpopular.
