The sequel to the 2009 hit did $105.8 million over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Hollywood.com.
Despite being excoriated by critics, two-thirds of whom gave the movie a thumbs-down, according to rottentomatoes.com, Hangover was a record-breaker early out of the gate.
Released on Thursday, the movie's $86.5 million from Friday to Sunday gave it the highest debut for a comedy on record, eclipsing The Simpsons Movie's $74 million. It also shattered Sex and the City's record for best debut for an R-rated film.

The opening propelled ticket sales for the holiday weekend to $280 million, shattering 2007's record of $254.6 million.
Hangover II has earned $137.4 million since its release Thursday, putting it within range of beating the predecessor's record of highest-grossing R-rated film at $277 million.
The movie also scored with audiences, earning an A-, according to survey site CinemaScore
