The sequel to the 2009 hit did $105.8 million over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates from box office trackers Hollywood.com.

Despite being excoriated by critics, two-thirds of whom gave the movie a thumbs-down, according to rottentomatoes.com, Hangover was a record-breaker early out of the gate.

Released on Thursday, the movie's $86.5 million from Friday to Sunday gave it the highest debut for a comedy on record, eclipsing The Simpsons Movie's $74 million. It also shattered Sex and the City's record for best debut for an R-rated film.
