Labor, more than anything, is governed by the law of diminishing returns. In any given occupation, productivity quickly starts to fall after a certain point. Working longer and harder is practically impossible for some occupations that are mentally or physically demanding, trying just leads to burn-out and health problems.

Point to someone who thinks an unskilled laborer should make what a lawyer does. Wages for practically everyone remain flat in spite of unprecedented gains in productivity and corporate profits.
