The Cross in the Courts

The battle to keep the Mount Soledad cross in San Diego aloft, gained some wind in its sails by a vote of the citizenry this week. 75% of San Diegans voted to resist efforts, lead by the ACLU, to have the cross removed. Sin of all sins, the cross is on public property.

The old hymn, At the Cross, begins with, “At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light…” Perhaps with this overwhelming demonstration of the will of the people, the next judge who takes up this issue (you don’t think the cross’s opponents would give up, do you?), will “see the light” and finally end this attempt to deny Americans their religious heritage.

Just goes to show when the people actually vote on something it's often a very different outcome than the ACLU would have us beleive. Maybe citizens will finally get fed up with select judges making rules for the majority??

For those that resist any symbol, or mention of the Cross, here's what Paul said in 1 Corinthians Chapter 1, verse 18 in the New Testament of the bible.

"For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God."

Seems like Paul dealt with the same type of people 2,000 years ago.

The cross is the great "divider" of humanity. The cross calls mankind to bow down, and realize their hopelessness. Human pride, selfishness, and one's own fears to give up control is the enemy of the cross. It all started in the Garden with Sinatra's mantra, "I'll Do It My Way.", and it has never changed; just the names, situations, cultures, races and places have.

A bit of news: http://www.worldmagblog.com/blog/archives/028532.html

9th Circuit: Vacate order to remove Soledad cross

The 9th Circuit appeals court yesterday ruled that a U.S. district court must vacate its order for the City of San Diego to remove the cross that is part of a war memorial atop Mt. Soledad in La Jolla, California. (You can read the ruling here.)

On May 3, 2006, Judge Gordon Thompson, Jr., moved to enforce an order he initially made in 1991, telling the city that the cross violated the state constitution's ban on government aid and preference for religion, and to remove it or face a fine of $5,000 per day. In August, Congress passed a bill allowing the federal government to take control of the land. That rendered Judge Thompson's order moot, since the land no longer fell under the authority of the California constitution, triggering the 9th Circuit's decision.

But the battle over the cross isn't over yet. Two lawsuits challenging the land transfer are moving through federal court with a potential trial scheduled for July.
