In this excellent piece, George Neumayr refers to the rupture of relations between the Vatican and al-Azhar that took place during the time of Pope Benedict. As I explained here, that rupture took place because Pope Benedict dared to speak out about the Muslim persecution of Christians. By contrast, Francis energetically defends Islam, and leaves the persecuted Christians twisting in the wind, so he is acceptable to al-Azhar.

I must have missed that bible chapter where Jesus' disciples behead people, force them into sex slavery and make them pay a tax on pain of death if they refuse to convert.

This Pope is a shame to the office, but I do believe that the Holy Spirit has a reason for him to be there.

Throughout history, some Popes have been maniacs but who had the gift of addressing a particular problem that was critical for that time, and often this is not really understood for centuries.

I have only read up on a few of them, but in every case, it was the right thing for the church at the time.

Having faith that the Holy Spirit is still in charge of the church despite what I keep reading in the English translation of the Vatican releases is a test of faith.

There is a difference between the hierarchy and the actual people. People are individuals so depends on the person, many were raised Catholics but do not believe in the tenants of the church teachings, many Mormons I have known over the years are the same way, they happened to be born into a family with a particular religion.
