Federer played at the highest level in tennis history from 2003-2009
However ..I think Novak has had the greatest career ever
He is 24-0 this year and is massive fav to win the USO and get his 18th slam
He is the best defensive player of all time and has has greatest return game of all time
He was dominated both Fed and Nad the last 10 yrs at hard and grass courts

I have no doubt Djokovic will overtake Fedal in most if not almost all categories with years to go! No one will ever have a career year he had in 2015 winning 3 majors, finalist in the 4th, played 8 Masters (winning 6), and was a finalist in the other 2! His record # of top 10 wins (35), $$ ($21M), and ATP points won't be matched anytime soon! ;)

Federer won 3 grand slams in the same year in 3 different yrs
Peak Fed is the best ever but Djoker had the better career

Tennis greatest record is Borg winning back to back on clay and grass and Nadal winning 12-13 FO
Borg days you had specialist in each surface and the courts were vastly different

Laver winning the grand slam is most special but the 60s was such a weak decade

50s was a great decade
60s very weak
70s and 80s very great
90s very good
2020s- very weak

Even Fed's 3 seasons of 3 Major wins couldn't match 2011 & 2015 where Djokovic not only won 3 majors, he dominated the Masters-1000's as well winning 5 or 6 out of the 9 and being a finalists in the others! Not sure anyone can catch that money total of $21M since his dominance was so complete in 2015! ;)

As always when assessing the GOAT, allowances must be made for equipment improvements and generational changes. The Djoker, today, would beat anyone who ever played before in a 5-set match. The power, the strokes, and the consistency would wear down any of them into submission. What people tend to overlook - because he has done this for so long - is that he takes shots that the opponent has already mentally counted as "winners," and returns them with power. This wears them down mentally like no other player.

Suffice it to identify the best player of each generation, and possibly to assess whether the competition was relatively strong or otherwise. Think about golf, by analogy: would Mickelson be the GOAT if Tiger had never been born? Possibly.

Did McEnroe's lifetime accomplishments suffer because he played against Lendl? How good were the Aussies who dominated the 60's? Hell, even Rod Laver looks weak on film, compared to even average pro's today.

Borg was relentless; it's hard to imagine anyone beating him easily in his prime. Same for Sampras.

But today's groundstrokes and serves are, collectively better than ever. Serve & volley is NOT POSSIBLE today because of the powerful groundstrokes that these guys have. Does the equipment play a part in that? Probably, but still...
