Slightly right of center is far right from the perspective of the far left, though. It works the same the other way. People genuinely think Obama is loony toon left because, from where they're standing on the fringe of the right, left of center looks extremist left.

If you look at the abortion bill Reagan passed as governor of California

And if you look at the Amnesty Bill Reagan passed as President

And if you look at the fact that Reagan strengthened Social Security

And if you look at the fact that Reagan spent 3x Carter and left the nation deeply in debt

And if you look at the number of compromises Reagan made with Tip O'neill and the Left, one thing becomes clear: he would be far to moderate for today's Republican Party.
