Excuse me, but I thought the Tea Party was all about free enterprise and competition? Instead Snyder gives Michigan more cronyism with the backing of Government Motors.

Governor Rick Snyder today signed bipartisan legislation aimed at discouraging Tesla Motors from selling its electric cars directly through company stores.

House Bill 5606, sponsored by state Rep. Aric Nesbitt, also prohibits auto manufacturers from dictating fees franchised dealers can charge customers. The legislation allows individual auto dealers to make the business decision whether to charge the transaction fee.

Snyder said direct sales of new vehicles is already banned in the state. This law will explicitly require all automakers to sell through a network of franchised dealers.

Earlier today General Motors urged the governor to sign the bill.

It was bipartisan legislation, so the OP failed right out of the chute.

What is free enterprise about heavily subsidized electric vehicles? Fail #2.

The idea that a company owned store is bad, while dealerships are good is simply ridiculous.

This sort of law is more proof that these states have the best government that money can buy. I have no doubt that the car dealers funded this entire fiasco.

Actually it was law already for the most part. It primarily just added Tesla. Dealerships represent companies AND themselves. This means you have warranty protecting with the company, but who helps you if they reject your claim? Dealerships frequently assist customers with repairs beyond the warranty and represent them to the companies.

The dealerships also support customers when companies fail. It all depends if you see a value in local representation I guess.

Nice idea. When was the last time a car company failed? At least one that the dealership would still be afloat and able to help?

All this legislation did was make it more inconvenient to buy a Tesla. Those who want them will simply have to go to the next state and buy one.

Was it Tea Partiers that wrote the bill too?

Selective outrage much?

That said, I find this kind of cronyism disgusting...just as much as I find government subsidization for Tesla disgusting.

One thing we can say for sure, no Libertarian would support this bill.

2004 Oldsmobile

2009 Pontiac

2009 Saturn

2011 (?) Mercury

Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Saturn were all subsidiaries of GM. Mercury was a subsidiary of Ford. That is why the dealerships were still there. And the warranties were unwritten by GM, so they never went away.

This is simply car dealers buying politicians to keep competition away for as long as they can.

What is free enterprise about heavily subsidized electric vehicles? Fail #2.

So Snyder didn't sign the bill?

You do realize that the fact the legislation was bipartisan, which I already knew, only bolsters my case and not yours, right?

It was a bipartisan supported bill.

Pontiac dealers or any of the others cannot or could not sell Chevrolets new, unless they were dealerships for that brand. Your comments regarding that subject are baseless and unfounded.

In a pig's eye. You tried to pin all of this on a Republican Governor. He is running as a Republican. The auto industry is number one in Michigan, any particular reason government shouldn't support its citizens and economic base?

He is a governor with the power of veto who ran as a Tea Party candidate. How would Tesla selling cars in Michigan not support the citizens of Michigan? Will the employees not be residents of Michigan? Will the purchasers of the vehicles not pay sales taxes to Michigan?

As with Democrats there are several types of Republicans, some are compassionate progressives, some are conservative, some are ultra liberal, some subscribe to cronyism, then you have the Tea Party, socialists..need I go on..which leads me to conclude affiliation has nothing to do with substance.
