Suspect in France Jewish school shooting arrested

PARIS, March 21 (Reuters) - A gunman suspected of killing of seven people in the name of al Qaeda was arrested by police in southwest France after a nearly 12-hour operation in the city ofToulouse, French television channels BFM TV and i-Tele reported on Wednesday.

One police source who is not directly linked to the investigation confirmed the arrest to Reuters, but several other sources said they were not aware of it.

The TV channels cited police sources for the information, without providing further details. It was not immediately possible to confirm this.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to speak to the nation this afternoon.

On Tuesday morning heavily armed policeman surrounded Mohammed Merah’s apartment, shot were exchanged until Merah threw this Colt 45 in exchanged for a communications device, he cut the communication hours later but resume it after a while, He said he has more weapons in his apartment including AK-47 assault rifle, explosives were found in his brother’s car., who was arrested, their mother said she had little control over her son, when police attempted to use her as a negotiator. Mohammed Merah who was calling himself a mujahedeen wanted to talk about his jihadist convictions.
His lawyer Christian Etelin said his client could show up and downs in his behavior but he never suspected Merah could be capable of such cruel crimes, he added that Mohammed flew to Afghanistan two years ago.

Mohammed Merah is the 24 year-old French born man who has been under police’s watch for years, ever since he committed his first infraction, non-terrorist crimes, including some with violence his last just last month (driving without a license), in 2007 he was arrested for planting a bomb, the following year was rejected from the army due to his criminal past, at the age of 18 he he said the decision for the shootings was the presence of the French troops in Afghanistan, the situation in Palestine, and France’s new decision to ban women from wearing burkas, the attack at the school was to avenge attacks on Palestinian children, Merah said this during a telephone call adding that the shooting in Toulouse was the first of many attacks soon to come.

‘Cruel’ shooter filmed French Jewish school killing spree, minister says

Claude Gueant told reporters video surveillance tapes at the school in Toulouse showed the gunman was recording his shooting spree with a small video camera attached to his neck.

“This adds another element to the profile of the killer. It is someone who is cruel enough to record it,” Gueant said at a primary school in the southwestern city.

He was using an assault rifle. He aimed it at the girl, but he had no bullets left, so he grabbed the little girl by the hair to make sure she doesn't run away, got out his handgun, and shot her in the head with it.
