Mark J. Bennett, former Attorney General of Hawaii, notorious anti-gun state with some of the lowest rates of gun ownership in the USA, has been nominated by Trump to serve on the Ninth Circuit (the most overturned and anti-gun circuit of all). Bennett has a long history of aggressively anti-2A political and legal action. The Democrats overwhelmingly support his nomination but Republicans are deeply concerned about his voting record re: guns. Trump’s nomination of Bennett contradicts his message only shortly beforehand at the NRA that he is a protector of gun rights.

Gun Control

In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the District of Columbia’s ban on ownership of handguns, finding an individual right to bear arms in the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.[21] When the case was being argued, state attorneys general of both parties weighed in both in favor of and against the D.C. ban.[22] While 31 attorneys general weighed in against the ban, five, including Bennett, signed onto a brief supporting it.[23] Speaking about the case, Bennett noted:

“We think that a decision that the Second Amendment prohibits strict gun-control laws is just wrong.”[24]

Notably, at the time of the suit, Hawaii had some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.[25]

POTUS has screwed up on this one... You know what to do and have the tools to do it...
IMPORTANT: Call the U.S. Senate at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to connect you with Leader McConnell’s office. Tell them (and your state’s US senators) that you OPPOSE President Trump’s 9th Circuit Court nominee Mark J. Bennett and ask for their NO vote! https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact 1 - to email.

“Hawaii, notorious anti-gun state…”

Nonsense.

Hawaii’s firearm regulatory measures are perfectly Constitutional and consistent with Second Amendment jurisprudence, none having been overturned by the Supreme Court.

“Speaking about the case, Bennett noted: “We think that a decision that the Second Amendment prohibits strict gun-control laws is just wrong.”’

If by ‘strict gun-control laws’ one is referring to assault weapons bans, such measures have been upheld by the courts as being in compliance with the Second Amendment.

“Notably, at the time of the suit, Hawaii had some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.”

However ‘strict’ some might perceive those laws to be, they are nonetheless Constitutional, reflecting the will of the people of the State, as enacted by their elected representatives.

Bennett sounds like a “states’ rights” conservative, something those on the right shouldn’t have a problem with.

That “We think that a decision that the Second Amendment prohibits strict gun-control laws is just wrong.”[24] sounds like he is an anti-gun advocate for all states to adhere to his standards to me.
