SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Steve Wilks has had a roller coaster ride in his first season as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers.

Faced with a tricky task of taking over a successful defense that still had the same position coaches and system of his predecessor DeMeco Ryans, Wilks tried to add his own twists without ruining what had worked so well in the past.

There were good moments such as a dominating five-game start to the season and bad ones such as a three-game losing streak in October that led to Wilks moving from the coaching booth to the sideline.

Didn't the 9ers have one of the best defenses in the league this season??? why did he get fired and not the head coach?...

Because the HC fired Wilkes. Shannahan needed a scapegoat for losing the superbowl with stupid decisions - like not preparing his team, or himself, for playoff overtime scenarios.
The Chiefs coaches were drilling the new overtime rules into the heads of the players throughout the playoffs.

Look at who Shanahans last 2 DCs were and their personalities. Salah and Ryans. Both high energy, vocal, rah rah alpha coaches. Now look at Wilks. The exact opposite. There’s your answer. They dont mesh. It has little to do with how good or not good the defense was this year.
