slavery existed in the northern states at the same time. The northern slave owners were equal to the southern ones in every way.

There were abuses, serious abuses, murders, lynchings, beatings, etc. But there were also compassionate slave owners who treated their slaves kindly and took care of them. Many refused to leave when they were freed and stayed on as employees. My great grandfather had ex-slaves who became part of the family and are buried in the family cemetary.

Generalizations are rarely accurate, and thats one of the problems in our current social media discussions.

Nikki Haley's statement was pretty good- she recognized that for descendents of Confederate era South Carolinians the flag had other connotations, but that for descendents of slaves, it had negative connotations- but that the flag had been coopted by racists. I recognize all three as being essentially true.

But I also think it is really an issue for South Carolina to decide and won't lose sleep either way.

What 'Northern' states?

Delaware- maybe you could call it Northern- and there were very, very few slaves in Delaware. Baltimore, Kentucky and Missouri were all Southern states that didn't secede.

There may have been 'good' slave owners but any slave lived in fear of rape, abuse or even worse being sold away from his or her family. At the time of the Civil War there had been a huge relocation of slaves from the Eastern states to the cotton belt- with slaves being sold away from their families.

Because it harms no one. A flag waving in the wind does no one any harm. It's a part of American history. It's NOT a statement about slavery. Slavery in modern times is all in one's mind. That shit has been over with for way over a hundred years. Is that flag taking food off of someone's table? Is that flag causing anyone financial hardships? Is that flag causing health issues? It's just something that gives people something to piss, bitch, and moan about. It does no one any harm.
