I left CA nearly ten years ago. I moved, bit by bit over a year and a half, making three or four UHaul trips. I noticed that the cost of renting the equipment kept rising as I went. I wouldn't want to do it today, the prices must be astronomical.

I moved from Cali to Texas in 2009. Bought a 1981 GMC for $1000 and a flatbed trailer for $500. Sold the trailer for $700 after the move and drove the truck for 6 year before giving it to a friend. My point… buy and sell if you’re making multiple trips
