If ticket funds were the only source of income Amtrak would shut down in days. The only way they can operate is with funds provided by the federal government through the Congress. Hence, without Congress Amtrak could not operate. Amtrak is totally dependent on funding from Congress. That is different than a comment that "total funding for Amtrak comes from Congress".

How long did it take?

$67 in gas at 30 mph and $3 a gallon for gas.

The ride is about 18 hours, compared to 10 driving.

Food on Amtrak is terrible, and very expensive.

Greyhound 16 hours, $154.
