Men's Health Magazine has published its list of America's smartest and dumbest cities. The rankings are based on several factors: the number of bachelor's degrees per capita; the number of universities; residents' SAT scores; state creativity scores, as assessed by a company called Catalytix; and the number of Nobel Prize winner for physics and medicine born in the city. Here are the smartest and the dumbest cities:

SMARTEST
1. Minneapolis, Minnesota
2. Boston, Mass.
3. Denver, Colo.
4. St. Paul, Minn.
5. Seattle, Wash.

DUMBEST
1. Fort Wayne, Indiana
2. Corpus Christi, Texas
3. Laredo, Texas
4. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
5. Newark, New Jersey

Adam I have to challenge this survery. I have no personal interest in those cities labelled "dumbest", but it appears to me that the methodology for arriving at this conclusion is badly skewed.

How can one characterize Ft. Wayne, Corpus Christi etc as among the "dumbest" when the people there are smart enough to avoig living in either Boston or Newark?

Las Vegas! lmfao!

Yeah, we are soooo dumb here that we take money from all the people in the smart cities! Put us on the dumb list..... I don't care, as long as everybody else keeps pay'n my taxes.

(actually, I can see Vegas as being rated a "dumb" city. a lot of the HS kids here drop out of school to pursue jobs in casinos)

Just proves what higher education can do. I've met some really stupid educated people. Please don't get me wrong; I am pro-education. I just think the criteria for these findings are unfair.

This makes a whole city smart?

I think it simply raises the average. :)

Woohoo Denver #3! For a small population base this is pretty good, no?

Does surrounding areas count???
Or about an hour away cause I'm about an hour from Denver...

I thought we would get clobbered on this one by the people living in the Blue States. Note that the smartest cities are almost all in the Blue States, while the dumbest cities are almost all in the Red States.

Fort Wayne, Indiana is not happy about this survey. There was a big article about the people's reaction to it in today's issue of The Indianapolis Star. I would imagine that Men's Health Magazine is going to get a lot of letters from people living in these "dumbest" cities.

Mpls and St. paul ain't that smart...they're FILLED with liberals who voted for Kerry. The rest of the state is actually VERY red, especially my area (anoka, coon rapids, blaine, fridley, andover, ramsey, champlin, dayton, elk river), with the exception of Duluth, which is now infested with liberals. If it wasn't for those 3 cities, Bush would have had more electoral votes because of this state.

I would imagine there is plenty of brainpower in Seattle, Wolvie. After all, weren't the people in King's County smart enough to figure out how to steal a governship from Rossi, the person a majority of the people in the state actually believe won the election?
