Six Sioux tribes are joining forces in an effort to develop a wind project in South Dakota that could become the largest in the US, and hope to finance most of it by issuing bonds through a newly-created tribal power authority.

Leaders of the Cheyenne River, Crow Creek, Oglala, Rosebud, Sisseton Wahpeton and Yankton Sioux envision the phased installation of 1GW to 2GW of wind capacity – a potential investment between $1.75bn and $3bn.

The tribes live on reservations that cover 16% of the total surface land area of South Dakota and have 58GW of wind resource, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The state had 783MW of wind capacity on 1 January, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
