I don't know exactly whats going on in the picture besides that the fact that its called Corset in the filename, but anything that has a pattern and simply requires moving fabric or sets of fabric to match that pattern can be easily and automatically done by a simple machine/basic robot

blu, mebbe someday. Not yet. Commercial sewing is heavy, dangerous work mainly done by women. One reason their skills were never valued, as say, a welder, is that it was/is "women's work". It is no longer, I dun think, but was once paid for not by the hour by but the piece and the pace alone would kill most people...then there's the lint in the air, which causes white lung disease, the chronic safety hazard violations (they aren't called "sweatshops" for nothing) and the loss of fingers, dexterity, eyesight, etc.

If they replaced these workers with robots, mankind would be better off...this is not work anyone can do for decades.

China isn't communist, yet President Obama is a Marxist/Socialist/Communist/Fascist!

????

I guess it all depends who your profits are made by. Chinese can be excused because they make money.

what does this have to do with anything?

Your question marks show that you have a very limited political lexicon. China is communist. Barack Obama is a Liberal Democrat.

Most folks not directly affected by job outsourcing to communist China seem to be able to excuse the Chinese not only their political position, but human rights violations, environmental damage and workplace safety ignorance all because the Chinese reap profits for the treasonous American firms doing business there. That's right. I called them treasonous.

And manufacturing jobs aren't merely unskilled labor installing tab A into slot B. Manufacturing jobs were the backbone of the American middle class. Kids today never learned that. They want to believe that flipping houses, trading stocks and manipulating commodities is the path to American success. Give me a steel worker, an auto worker, an appliance assembler and their work ethic any day. You can keep the kids without scruples and ethics.

They should sell weed, cookies are no good for you.

They should sell weed and about a half hour later, THEN sell their overpriced cookies.

If they did that they could afford to buy Union made-in-American uniforms.

They changed their minds yesterday, they're going to buy US made outfits after all... from Victoria Secret!

again china is communist in name only and I still have no idea why you interjected obama into this.

I don't excuse them but the fact is that factory jobs simply aren't needed or useful in this country anymore and the only way to save them is to artificially "fix" the market by placing tariffs or by taxing american owned companies that move jobs overseas to the point where they either leave the USA or they bring the jobs. I think most would simply leave the country first though

and your assertion that these jobs aren't some simple menial task here:

And manufacturing jobs aren't merely unskilled labor installing tab A into slot B.

is not back up by anything in the emotional drivel here:

and most "kids" aren't flipping houses or trading stocks as they require capital in the first place which most kids out of school don't have. smart "kids" do go into science and engineering though so they can work a real job as a scientists / engineers / researchers instead of having to depend on some huge company to pay them $10/h while they push stuff down an assembly line and then go bankrupt when the company shuts down the factory.

also, most people don't simply overlook the abuses of china but there is absolutely nothing a single person can do about it. our politicians and business owners are completely owned by china and would never call them out on their practices.

I'd like to see them do something about their fucking cookies.

That's shit is EXPENSIVE!

Actually, it isn't. A box of their cookies is reasonable for a fundraiser. Now Boy Scout popcorn, that stuff is crazy high. It's $15 for a box of microwave popcorn like you can buy at the store. Prices go up from their for the stuff in a can. I think the highest is $50.

Why shouldn't the girl scouts buy their uniforms from China? That's where the majority of the US flags are made. It's a shame, huh?

You CANNOT be serious, BBD!

Our FLAGS?

yes they have done it forever. they even manufacture the American flag suit pins that people find patriotic to wear

There HAVE to be US manufacturers, blu.

Whew.

Still, no patriot I know how knowlingly buy a US flag made in Communist China; it is terribly important to source goods, but not every purchase can be decided this-a-way.

Most Americans make purchases based on price. We simply can't compete with nations who don't have the same type of protections our government mandates. This is why people fight against unions. I've never been a big union hater. If it were not for unions, we wouldn't have the wages, regular working hours or benefits we all enjoy these days. They served a useful purpose. But after they got their inch, they started demanding miles. Companies have a difficult time making enough profit to stay in the black. They are almost forced to move operations off shore to simply stay in business and turn a profit. If you sell your product for 10 cents and it cost you 5 cents to make plus 3 cents in overhead, you make a 2 cent profit on each product. If because of union demands, rising taxes, government regulation, etc., your cost rises to 8 cents and your overhead to 5 cents, your cost rises to 13 cents. You can no longer sell at 10 cents. To make your 2 cent profit margin like you used to, you have to sell the product for 15 cents. A 50% increase in price. I go to the store and see your product for 15 cents and a Chineses product for 10 cents, I'll buy the Chinese product to make my spending dollars go further. Keep in mind that the Chinese company is making the 10 cent product for something like 3 cents and making a 7 cent profit. It starts looking really desirable to investors and company owners who don't want their company they worked so hard to build fold up, so they move operations to a place where they can compete and still make a profit. Do we want Americans to keep jobs? Sure we do. Can we pay them what they demand when competitors can do it for pennies on the dollar? No. People don't build companies to give people jobs. They build companies to make a nice living for themselves and if lucky get rich. Jobs are a byproduct of the company's success and growth.......not it's main purpose. Until the government creates an environment that is friendlt to business and allows them to compete in the global market, we will see more and more companies and jobs disappear.

If we don't reverse the trend, China will end up owning America without ever firing a single shot.

I could not agree with you more, kwc57. IMO, Chinese goods should be illegal to import into the US unless certified child and slave labor-free by Amnesty International. As for any other Chinese goods, the US should slap a 100% tariff on them.
