SEATTLE – The Seattle City Council is replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day in the city.

The resolution that passed unanimously Monday celebrates the contributions and culture of Native Americans and the indigenous community in Seattle on the second Monday in October, the same day as the federally recognized Columbus Day.

Tribal members and other supporters say the move recognizes the rich history of people who have inhabited the area for centuries.

"This action will allow us to bring into current present day our valuable and rich history, and it's there for future generations to learn," said Fawn Sharp, president of the Quinault Indian Nation on the Olympic Peninsula, who is also president of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.

"Nobody discovered Seattle, Washington," she said to a round of applause.

Isn't it a good thing you don't live in Seattle?

Meanwhile, people are free to vote any way they want to on any issue. If some people want to rename columbus day they have that right. If they want to celebrate the contributions that Native Indians made before europeans got here they have that right. I support their right to do so. I will join in with the celebration. While you celebrate the man who came here, spread disease, took indians as slaves and ravaged their populations. All for gold and money.

As for a written language. They wrote just the same way most did back in those times. In hieroglyphics. Europeans wrote that way too.

Keep in mind, when the pilgrims came to America, they were starving and sick. They were dying like flies. They couldn't grow crops or avoid disease. It was the Native Indians who helped them learn how to grow crops here and prosper.

You also should know that it was a woman indian, Sacajawea, who took Lewis and Clark to the mouth of the Columbia river where it emptied into the Pacific. Without that Indian woman, they never would have found it. Without the Native Indian canoes they never would have survived the Columbia River.

It was the native Indians who taught settlers how to build canoes and boats that wouldn't tip over in the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean and Columbia River.

As for the government supporting them? Most Native Indian tribes now have casinos and are making money hand over fist. There's a girl and her brother who go to the same private school my daughter goes to. They're Tulalip Indians. The tuition for their private education is being 100% paid for by the tribe. When they go to college, the tribe will pay for 100% of their tuition and expenses. Not one penny comes from the government. Native Indians here in Washington create jobs for everyone and contribute to the economy.
