Satan in Islam

Muslim75

I have a question about Iblis/ Satan/ Shaytan.

In Islam, Satan is described as a Djinn who was among the ranks of Allah's Angels. God told them all to bow before Adam but Iblis refused, and was banished from Eden, and destined to be "cast into the lake of fire" upon Judgement Day.

My question is this.

Islam has teachings that are not in the Quran. What do they say about what Iblis was like before his fall? How did Iblis become so close to God? How did Iblis ascend into the ranks of Angels as a Djinn?

Its okay if you don't have any answers, I was just curious and thought I might ask just in case you did.

Peace

-Ash

Iblis was indeed a great servant of God. He saw a light in the divine realm and thought it was destined to him. When God created Adam he put that light on the forehead of Adam, and ordered all angels to bow to him. Angels bowed to him, Iblis did not. He was displeased with the fact that that light was not for him. Angels bowed to Adam because of that light they saw. That was the light of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

From that time on, the Jinn (firy being) who refused to bow to Adam was called Iblis. Everything that happened was but a way of teaching to mankind. Iblis could never sin in the presence of God except that God wanted it and approved of it. This was done in order that Iblis would later tempt Adam, and Adam would be sent down on earth. God wanted to send down Adam on earth. This is why all of this happened. Iblis is on a mission to mislead people, a mission from God. There is nothing wrong with it, in the eyes of God.

Then there are the human beings who allow Satan (whose name is Iblis) to mislead them, and there are the human beings who disobey him, and thereby earn the satisfaction of God.

Abraham would be shy to pray to God for some things, though they were essential. When God asked him about it, he said he would not ask God about things of this world. God then told him that what was necessary was not considered to Him as things of this world. Abraham was renouncing the world.

John the Baptist, who was the cousin of Jesus, and both of them were prophets, used to eat tree leaves out of fear of sinning.

This is how Satan is fought. But it must be done using the help of God, not by oneself.

I speak from the traditional knowledge in Islam.

Satan (Shaytan in Arabic, and his name is Iblees) has a huge number of Satans with him (there is not just one Satan, there are a huge number of them, and they work for Iblees, the first Satan).

Satan runs in the vein of the human being. He calls the human being to evil, day and night without ever tiring. He is on a mission, from God Almighty. God ordered him to inspire the people with evil. This is his job, to call people to evil, ceaselessly. A hint to that is that it is impossible to sin in the heavens, to eat from the Tree or any other sin. This does not happen in the heavens or in the presence of God.

Satan has 3 axis of conduct.

First, he makes one to be lazy, for humans like to rest. Second, he makes people to cheat and to deceive. Third, he makes people to think they are better than others.

God asked people, through Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) to fight Satan ceaselessly, day and night. This fight purifies the heart, because each human being is born with the ability to do evil. Humans are born pure, but with the ability to sin and do evil. The aim of Islam is to purify the human being, through fighting against Satan until he becomes pure. At that time, he will be allowed to be re-united with the everloving God who created him.

However, fighting Satan must be done with the help of God. Without it, one stands no chance.
Interesting.

The Bible says that Satan comes to kill, steal, and destroy. You know, kinda like ancient warlords in days of old.....

Muhammad was not born - that is impossible - Muslim75. You are claiming Muhammad to be a god? That is not in scripture. Give me chapter and verse from the bible for such a story. It does not exist. How could your book differ from the teachings of my Book - the Bible - and still be correct? There cannot be two truths. My Bible existed before your Koran. Your prophet said my Bible is perfect - he died believing the Book was perfect. It was only claimed corrupted after men who came after Mohammad could not answer the contradictions and flaws found within it. It was their only way of holding fast to their own book. To claim the Bible which preceded their book was corrupted. But it was not. Jesus Christ is the Word. Your prophet claimed Jesus was sinless and perfect. So how could His words be corrupted? Not possible.

There can only be One Truth, One Way, One life and that life is in Jesus Christ, Muslim75. Jesus has told us what we must do. We must confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that He died on the cross for our sins and shed his blood for us - that he rose from the grave on the 3rd day! That is what we must do. Read Romans 10:9,10. We must be born again, Muslim75. Muhammad didn't hang on a cross for your sins and shed his blood and die for you. Neither did any other man. Only Jesus Christ who is God - came to earth in the flesh - to redeem us from the curse of sin on Adam and Eve and if we call upon His name - we shall be saved. Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ shall be saved. No man can enter into heaven unless he has been born again.

Muhammad was a prophet when Adam was between water and clay. Muhammad was a prophet before Adam. He was a prophet, not God.

Jeremiah,

There is no way to believe a book about the Divine dating back 2000 years ago to be kept authentic to this day, except if there is a divine miracle made specifically to that effect. Christianity does not mention such a thing. Islam does, for the Qur'an.

Christianity does not even talk of a book revealed by God. All it features is the Bible which is a compilation from many sources. Islam teaches that there was a book revealed from God to Jesus, the Gospel, like the Torah was revealed to Moses from God, and the Qur'an (which is the greatest and the best Book) to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) from God Almighty.

As to your objecting to what I said about lying, that Islam teaches to never lie; you are wrong.

Islam teaches to never lie, and Islam considers lying as one of the greatest evils. You mention that trickery was used to kill Ibnul Ashraf. That is true. Call it political assassination if you want.

Ibnul Ashraf kept saying harsh things about Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family). So Muhammad decided to have him killed. Muhammad Ibn Maslama (may God be well pleased with him) was one of the Companions. The Companions were holy and heavenly, like the Successors after them. Muhammad Ibn Maslama was charged with the murder of Ibnul Ashraf. He used trickery to achieve that. Islam makes up to 5 exceptions, where it is allowed to lie, one of which is war, and Ibnul Ashraf was at war against Muhammad.

The trickery was to make him believe that Muhammad Ibn Maslama was fed up of Muhammad and decided to leave Islam, so he spoke evil words against Muhammad to convince Ibnul Ashraf that he was on his side.

there are four schools of thought in Islam. The school of Imam Malik says all lying is absolutely forbidden, even at war.

Islam strongly emphasizes to never lie. This is one the greatest sins and the greatest evils. Muhammad is called the Truthful the Trustworty (As Sadiq Al Amin) and Abu Bakr, his closest Companion is called the Truthful (As Siddiq).

The bible says resist the devil who prowls around like a lion seeking to devour us and then he will flee from us. But I do not see where a Muslims assurance of final victory lies in that fight. Even having fought all your life against evil it seems to me that you can never be sure that you have done enough and indeed have even fought for the right things.
Islamic theology teaches that God still makes the final decision as to a person's eternal destination.

Regardless of how righteous of a life a person has lived. ......

Not sure what the passing out for hunger bit was about. But there is an adversary trying to deceive us.

the problem is we know that the Qur'an was compiled during the reign of the caliphs because of the variant texts going around. And we have no reason to believe it was the originals that survived

This topic is about Satan in Islam, not about Jesus of Nazereth. So, unless you have something important to say or ask about Iblis, you should take your radical christian trolling into someplace more relevant. I'm sure you have hundreds of threads designed for just that.

Let us instead have a chill discussion regarding the Islamic perspective about Satan, without Christians and atheists leaping at the opportunity to spread their hate.

If anything, share your own perspective about Satan and how it contrasts with Iblis in Islam.

Is it only the Shia tradition then that permits lying when it advances the Muslim Ummah or protects Muslims from being killed for their faith?

Granted that is also the case in Christianity. People are saved by grace not choice. Our choices relate to receiving Gods grace or blocking it. But a Christian can have assurance about their salvation based on Gods promises and that is something that appears to be missing in Islam.

I forgot to say that there is no lake of fire in Islam. There is Hell.

Islam has teachings that are not in the Quran.
All the sciences of Islam, and they are endless in quantity and endless in content are hidden within the Qur'an. Not only that, but all the sciences in the world are derived from the Qur'an. The Qur'an is their source. Take for instance the fact that the Qur'an mentions explicitly scientific truths, like the earth being round, while no other religious scripture does. The Qur'an says, in the 7th century: "He merges the night into the day and He merges the day into the night...", in other words, the earth is round. The church struggled when confronted with the fact that the earth was not flat.

You are wrong. One is asked to increase hope instead of fear when death approaches, precisely because God acts according to what one thinks of Him. If you think He will forgive you, then He will. But it is impossible to have (real) hope and not fear at the time of death, because Satan comes to one at that time, and there is no chance to have the edge.

This is why we fight Satan in our lifetimes, so that after due fighting we defeat him. This is only possible using the help of God, not by oneself. Once you reach God, Satan will leave you, and he will not assault you at the time of death. Once you reach God, God does not throw you away from His Court.

the problem is we know that the Qur'an was compiled during the reign of the caliphs because of the variant texts going around. And we have no reason to believe it was the originals that survived

The Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) during his lifetime in 7 different versions, all of them being true. When it was decided to put together the Qur'an into one book, only one form was kept.

Is it only the Shia tradition then that permits lying when it advances the Muslim Ummah or protects Muslims from being killed for their faith?

Taqiyya - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

There is no lying in Islam for the sake of advancement of the Umma (the Nation). In addition there is no concept as such as "advancement" of the Umma. The word Umma pertains to three levels: the Umma of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) also includes anyone who lived after Muhammad, Muslim or not.

Shia is a minority in Islam. They are considered Muslims because they believe Muhammad is a prophet of God. Islam however considers their doctrines as being out of Islam. Nonetheless, what the Shia say (and I learnt it from your Wikipedia link) pertains mainly to torture, not killing.

Granted that is also the case in Christianity. People are saved by grace not choice. Our choices relate to receiving Gods grace or blocking it. But a Christian can have assurance about their salvation based on Gods promises and that is something that appears to be missing in Islam.

Christianity says people are saved by their choice of being Christians. That's very childish. Men hav responsibilities. Also, choosing is an action, not of the limbs but of the heart; so just as you know you your bodily actions can never reach the Purity of God, so also your personal choices can never reach the Purity of God.

7 variants of the Qur'an, yet somehow all were true. Which is why the caliph felt the need to destroy six of them.

so God reveals 7 true different texts and the holy disciples destroy 6 of them? And somehow that proves they are confirmed and blessed of God and that's His religion?

I would argue that those who are faithful followers of the Lord will receive and retain all revelation they receive. They will not destroy anything from God.

for all we know Mohammad could have received real revelation from God and yet Satan could have gained such control over the hearts of those who came after that they corrupted what Mohammad was given.

Christians are not saved because we choose to be saved but rather because God has made it possible by His grace. Our choice is to receive a free gift or not. So no Christians do not believe that actions earn salvation or even the purity of our hearts. Having been saved we rather see changes occur in our actions and in our thoughts and motivations that reflect our new condition before God. We respond in thankfulness not in fear to a God who has paved the way. In the same way Satans authority over our lives is already overthrown and it is simply a question of working through the meaning of that. Of course we face all sorts of tests and extreme choices but we do so as people who already know that the victory is won. I am not sure on what basis a Muslim can base his confidence that Satan can be defeated.

"Allah" is the god of Abraham. When you see translations into English, "Allah" appears as "God."

Instead of trying to bash Islam by lying, try using the truth sometime. Has pleanty of true things to hang it on.
