Sarah Murnaghan - Lung Transplant FAILED

And this case is disgusting. Two sets of inferior lungs, thousands of dollars spent, like,y thousands in debt for an 11 year old who isn't even going to live. They are torturing that child.

It might be because they are incompatible as they are from an adult. It would seem customary to check all organ donations for disease by blood tests PRIOR to being harvested.

It usually takes a few days to develop a culture for disease, it a tiny fraction of that time for donated organs to go bad.

if I recall correctly the panel that makes or made the rule ala who gets 'lungs' etc. delineated the boundaries, were Doctors...it didn't just appear out of nowhere, that had been the rules for a while.

sarah got that changed by a judge, becasue her parents found a way to surface and bring attention to their case, Sibelius was exactly right when she said she could not change the rules ( and if she had she would be as wrong as the judge inho).

Look, if the new paradigm is who yells loudest and best able to manage the press etc. as to how care is meted out, we are in deep shit.

This may sound harsh but I cannot think of anyway other way to say it- sarah may be cute and her parents successful at extending her life or giving her the opportunity to live, but, if this second set of lungs fails too, they have taken 2 sets of lungs that would have had provided much better odds as laid out by those doctors, given to the patients who had the best chances of integrating/utilizing them.

I said it then and I included every politician who got involved from each party and every media outlet, Fox, abc et al. Using emotional appeals to drive distribution of care is dishonest. If we are not going to let Doctors make those rules and turn it over to the judiciary, well, its going to be chaos.

This is a highly charged very emotional issue because literally we do not have enough organs to be able to save people.

I pity the "deciders". What a burden to bear.

I'm conflicted on many medical issues politically of course as we all are, but when one steps away from the keyboard and into those doctors shoes......

I couldn't do what they do.

That is why they have strict rules that cannot be ignored simply because they can think of dozens of reasons to do so.

Why was this attempted twice ?

Because the first set of lungs would only buy her a few weeks - the doctors knew that. Two transplants were obviously planned.

One thing I will correct is the second set of lungs did not have pneumonia. The person with them had a history of pneumonia but they would not transplant a set of lungs from a person currently suffering from pneumonia.

The article says the lungs had pneumonia, and the doctors cut it out of the lungs.

Noomi in her OP sounds like she wanted the transplants to fail. How sickening must one person be?

Of course I didn't - but I am not surprised that it failed.

Hear that, folks? The lungs she received FAILED and she has had a second transplant.
The first set of lungs lasted barely hours after the surgery, and she was placed on VA ECMO, a bypass machine, which would keep her alive for a week.
A second set of lungs was donated (adult, again) and she has had her second transplant.

See, this could have been predicted. Adult lungs do not belong in the body of a child:

The new lungs are infected with pneumonia. Great, giving a set of infected lungs to a kid with infected lungs. That's fucked up.
So the FIRST set of donated lungs.... a very rare commodity to come by... died. That also means that some person on the list in front of her lost their chance at life too.

the girl lost her chance
the person on the donor list in front of her lost their chance
the lungs lost their chance to give life.

lose, lose, lose...

and she gets ..... another set of lungs in front of others...... :eusa_hand:

her time is up...she has had her chances in front of the long list.... sorry...next time she just needs to die.

Blunt but true.

Doctors knew adult lungs wouldn't work on her. It's sucks and life isn't fair but the best chance of survival was in an adult for those lungs. Stupid decision by the courts to allow this.

the court should not have intervened in medical decisions. A set of adult lungs were wasted on a child.

I will be interested to see if a second set of lungs were wasted on her.

What happened was Sarah's doctors wanted to perform an experimental surgery and needed a good test case.

We used to have a principle of law, that laws would not be passed that benefit only a single person. Unfortunately that principle, like many others, has gone by the wayside. Now it's a media battle for public opinion. We have become more like spectators in the gladiatorial arene showing by thumbs up who lives and who dies before cheering crowds.

Yup. Like giving organs to old fat useless rich drug addicts, actors, and members of the political class.

Poor little Sarah. Why isn't every single human being a donor?

The one thing about the transplant list that leads idiots to assume rich people get special treatment is it scores people higher the closer they are to death. The reason for that is that is what they do in triage, take the people who need help first, but it should factor in whether it would actually help, and give priority to people who didn't drink themselves into a sick liver.

Poor little Sarah. Why isn't every single human being a donor?

It is not the lack of donors that causes the shortage, it is the fact that it is legal for people to die under less than ideal circumstances. Unless they all start dying from massive head trauma within an hour of a trauma center that is certified to harvest organs it wouldn't make a difference. You should write your congresscritter and have him fix that by making it a death penalty offense to be so inconsiderate.

There are more than 88,000 Americans on the organ transplant waiting list. Roughly 10 percent of them will die before receiving an organ. These lost lives are not so much an act of God as they are an act of Congress because of its 1984 National Organ Transplant Act, as amended, which prohibits payment to organ donors.
Finally, there’s the humane question. If you or a loved one were in dire need of a lifesaving kidney or lung transplant, which would you prefer: being placed on an organ transplant waiting list, or having the right to sell assets or take out a loan to purchase an organ?
