Whoever made it conventional wisdom for a NFL quarterback to NEVER take off with the ball needs to re-think this.

Consultants and coaches have pretty much programmed the Favres and the Romos of the world to NEVER take off. This is really stupid.

IF a QB is known to take off with it, defensive coordinators hesitate to blitz him, and the defensive line thinks twice before teeing off on him. This slows down the pressure, makes the passing game easier and keeps that element of danger always present in the minds of defenders, including most importantly, the secondary.

But when you are fully committed to standing back there, grilling hot dogs and holding that ball while the world is falling down around you, you get what we saw in New Orleans and Minnesota the last couple of weeks: Drew Bledsoe at QB for the Cowboys and Vikings. Clue to NFL quarterbacks: They are after you because you have the ball, dumbass. NOT because you have a hotter wife than they do, not because you make more money and get all the press, because of the fucking BALL. They want it or they want you to EAT it.

Now, of course I understand -- they tell them not to run in order to prevent injuries. But does it prevent injuries to get HIT 20 times like Favre and Romo did? Does it prevent injuries to take stupid sacks all damn day?

RUN

WITH

THE

GODDAMNED

BALL

EVERY

FUCKING

CHANCE

YOU

GET.

Coaches and consultants: Turn these guys LOOSE and let them take off when they feel the urge! Stop screwing with their heads. They have the "slide" and all kinds of rules in their favor once they take off.

And it WILL cause defenses to not be so aggressive. They WILL be playing that run, opening up the passing lanes and making your offense more unpredictable and therefore more productive -- and actually making the game safer for your quarterback.

And isn't that what you really want?

Yeah, it's not like they get tackled in a kinder, gentler way if they just stay in the pocket

Steve Young lost a LOT of VERY LUCRATIVE years for running the ball TOO MUCH! You may also want to consider that QBs are NOT the fastest guys out there so to pick up TWO YARDS to get PLASTERED by a Linebacker is NOT the best use of a $20 MILLION QB.
~yawn~

Young lost far MORE years sitting on a bench as backup.

He was NEVER injured running the ball. And he didn't run all that often anyway.

Fail.

You may ALSO want to consider that MOST QBs are FAR more acurate in the "pocket" so rolling out to have the OPTION to run could lead to more INTERCEPTIONS.
You're not seeing the point.

They need to know it's okay to RUN every time they have the ball in their hands. NOT just on designed plays. Mainly on BUSTED plays.

Instead of just sitting back there waiting to get clobbered. When a play breaks down, RUN!

He may not have run very often...but when he ran, it was fun to watch.

On a busted play with 15 yards with no defense any where NEAR them, yeah I couldn't agree more. I get your point but you also don't want a QB with happy feet who runs BEFORE considering ALL of his options.
No one said or even thought anything like that. You pulled that straw man out of your ass.

They have programmed these guys NEVER to run. They don't, because it's been drummed into their head NOT to run..

Yes, they CAN do more damage with completed passes than they can running. But a QB running opens up the passing and reduces pressure. Even if it's just 4-5 yards.

If it's in the back of a defense's mind that this dude might take off, they PLAY HIM DIFFERENTLY. They give him RESPECT. Because they know they are VULNERABLE to these nit-picking little 4-5 yard runs.

Less blitzing, less upfield pressure, fewer sacks and hits, paranoid secondary.

And was effective, and scary as hell to defensive coordinators and defensive personnel all over the league.

Just like Roger Staubach, Fran Tarkington, many others and to a large degree Favre and Romo before the programming got entrenched.

Tarkenton didn't often run for positive yardage. He probably covered more yardage laterally than any other player in history.

I think Aaron Rogers was the #2 rusher for the Packers this year.

But they were always scared to death of Tark taking off.

And no, I agree your QB shouldn't be your #1 or #2 or even #3 rusher.

Tarkenton didn't often run for positive yardage.
That led to an interesting comparison.

Steve Young: 4239 career rushing yards, 43 rushing TDs. 13 years.

Fran Tarkenton: 3674 career rushing yards. 32 rushing TDs. 13 years.

Oh I LOVED to watch him run but I remember one run where he got like 15 yards and could have stepped out of bounds, instead he turned in side and ran RIGHT INTO A LINBACKER for an extra five yards. TOUGH AS NAILS but VERY reckless with his health.
