U.S. Tells Ankara Iran-Sanctions-Case Suspect In 'Good Health'

Media reports last week said U.S. special prosecutor Robert Mueller is investigating whether Turkish officials discussed paying former national security adviser Michael Flynn $15 million to secure Zarrab's release and to allow the deportation of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric residing in the United States who Erdogan accuses of engineering Turkey's failed July 2016 coup.

'Stealth' Turkish businessman a no-show for trial this month

Even a co-defendant's lawyer last week labeled Reza Zarrab the "stealth" defendant after he and his lawyers skipped a pretrial conference a few weeks before the scheduled date of his trial on charges that he conspired to process hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of financial transactions for Iranian businesses or Iran's government through U.S. banks. Authorities say those transactions are banned by U.S. and international sanctions.

Prosecutors and the judge made no mention of him. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, was not in court. Asked for comment, he declined.

The signs make it likely his case will be resolved as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Mueller probing possible deal between Turks, Flynn during presidential transition

Four people familiar with the investigation said Mueller is looking into whether Flynn discussed in the late December meeting orchestrating the return to Turkey of a chief rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who lives in the U.S. Additionally, three people familiar with the probe said investigators are examining whether Flynn and other participants discussed a way to free a Turkish-Iranian gold trader, Reza Zarrab, who is jailed in the U.S. Zarrab is facing federal charges that he helped Iran skirt U.S. sanctions.

Mueller is specifically examining whether the deal, if successful, would have led to millions of dollars in secret payments to Flynn, according to three sources familiar with the investigation.

Wow, this just keeps getting better and better.

The bottom line is that it looks as if Flynn was offered 15 million to help either legally send or to help kidnap a Turkish cleric who is here legally and send him to Turkey because they blame him for an uprising.

The guy in the middle, Zarrab, is currently being held for illegally trading gold for oil in violation of Iranian sanctions. Trump's close friend and supporter, Rudy Giuliani, is defending Zarrab who could end up singing which would make it even worse for Flynn. Flynn's son is involved but how? That information hasn't been divulged. At least not yet.

Curiouser and curiouser.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. It's all very complicated, but Mueller is putting it together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Can't wait to see the picture.
