Reno Is Tesla's First Choice As A Gigafactory Site - But Elon Musk Sets A High Price Tag

Tesla Motors Tesla Motors made it official on Thursday: it has broken ground outside Reno, Nevada, for the first potential site of its $5 billion gigafactory plant.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk disclosed the location in a letter to shareholders that accompanied Tesla’s second-quarter results. It has long been rumored that Reno stood the best chance of becoming a gigafactory semi-finalist. And in fact, Musk said that Tesla actually broke ground at the Reno location last month.

Musk was careful to say that the site “could be” the final location for the gigafactory, which will produce battery packs to power Tesla’s upcoming Model 3 car, due later in the decade.

<snip>

Eventually, Tesla plans a 10 million square foot factory — five times bigger than most conventional automobile assembly plants. The Gigafactory would employ about 6,500 employees by 2020, and is set to open around 2017.

But-----but before a final decision is made, Tesla has to see how much money and other goodies they can wring out of the states - ain't bribery capitalism great?
.

Musk is sitting on nearly $3 billion in cash reserves, yet generated only $2 million net cash flow in Q2.
He better have some tricks up his sleeve, other than telling his investors "There are things you don't know about". :eusa_eh:

RENO, Nev. -- Tesla Motors (TSLA) has chosen Nevada as the site for a massive, $5 billion factory that will pump out batteries for a new generation of electric cars, a person familiar with the company's plans said Wednesday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made, said work would soon resume at an industrial park outside Reno.

Maybe Tex Perry would've had a shot at Tesla's $5 billion factory and the 6,500 jobs the factory brings with it if Tex allowed Tesla's to be sold in Texas?
Typical Republicans - ideology over economics and jobs.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry's charms were apparently lost on electric carmaker Tesla.
Despite Perry's
shoddy record on clean energy, the former Republican presidential candidate desperately wanted Tesla to build its $5 billion battery factory in the Lone Star State. Perry personally led negotiations with Tesla over its so-called Gigafactory, which is expected to create 6,500 jobs. The governor even drove a Tesla Model S through California’s state capital in June, in a public stunt that the Los Angeles Times found surmountable to “stalking.”

“Tesla’s a big project,” Perry said during an interview with “Opening Bell” on Fox Business News in March. “I think the cachet of being able to say we put that manufacturing facility in our state is hard to pass up.”

All for naught. On Thursday, Tesla settled on Nevada as the location for its $5 billion 'Gigafactory,' ending a monthslong contest with Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Tesla’s home state of California.

Yeah, when tesla goes under we'll see who's sorry...

So Perry wouldn't offer a big enough bribe to Tesla to relocate and you'll criticize him for that, even as you criticize Utah for offering such a bribe.
What a fucking ignorant hypocrite.

Big fucking deal. Texas has added tens of thousands of jobs in recent years, due to... hydraulic fracturing. A process that the Liberal party of "education and science" does not believe in nor condones. Fuck democrats.

This is what real recovery is about, deep pockets investing in America with the aim of achieving long-term profit. I can see why some think it's odd seeing as how most of the other super-rich are sitting on their cash while engineering our decent into abject serfdom and investing in nothing but politicians.

Any third world shithole can produce raw materials, real, permanent economic prosperity comes from innovation and producing a unique finished product.

Look at you! The Palin/Cain/Perry/Romney supporter talking about someone else being stupid.

Are you hopeful that Tesla succeeds?

Certainly, who wouldn't? The question is ,do they need a bunch of tax payer monies to make it or not.

A good example of what can and most time dose happen,Our local leaders and this goes right up the ladder to the Governor of New York, just love to make tax exempt deals for companies to locate in new york, the problem is there companies come in make money for the time that they get tax breaks then leave when the time is up,who gets the shit end of the stick? the local tax base does, they are doinig it again with the Their new 10 years no tax deal.If Tesla can't do it on their own, what makes you think they will seceded?

To clarify,I think Musk is a visionary and a very exciting person and I wish them all the best, but we have poured billions into failed companies laty we the tax base needs to be awake and thinking when comaies want big breaks .
