(CNN) -- A top Iranian navy commander said the country's foreign minister has called for the United States to apologize for the "encroachment" of American vessels into Iranian territorial waters, state-run media reported. Ten U.S. soldiers are being held on Farsi Island and are being questioned to determine whether they "entered Iranian waters intentionally on an intelligence mission," the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps said, according to the state-run Press TV.

Iran detains 10 US sailors on Farsi Island
Tuesday 12th January, 2016 | WASHINGTON - Iran has detained 10 sailors who were aboard two small American Navy boats adrift on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf, senior military officials in Pentagon said.
The 10 American sailors aboard the small riverine vessels were on a training mission and were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when US officials lost contact with them, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said. Iran's coast guard took them into custody near the Farsi Island that sits in the Persian Gulf in between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and is fortified by Iranian Revolutionary Guards. "We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly," Cook said. One of the boats may have experienced mechanical failure and drifted into Iranian-claimed waters when they lost the contact.

Fox News citing an unnamed "senior Obama administration official" said that Iranian authorities have assured the United States that sailors "will promptly be allowed to continue their journey". The defense official also told Fox that one of the Navy riverine vessels "might" have been disabled and drifted into Iranian territorial waters, and the other stayed nearby attempting to fix the problem. "Our top priority is the safety and security of our service members detained by Iran," said House Speaker Paul Ryan. "I am closely monitoring the situation, and I hope the president will soon update the American people." American naval ships routinely navigate the waters of the Persian Gulf near Iranian territory.

The Gulf has been a flashpoint in the Middle East, and the incident comes on the same day President Barack Obama was set to give his annual State of the Union address. "At this point, we're still monitoring the situation and it's not entirely clear what happened," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on MSNBC, adding that Iranian authorities confirmed that the sailors are safe. Earnest said there remained no exact time frame for when the sailors would be let go, but didn't expect a long delay. Officials told NBC News that the Americans aren't expected to be released until around daybreak Wednesday.

Iranian official says US sailor issue 'is being resolved'
Jan 13,`16 WASHINGTON (AP) -- The detention of 10 U.S. Navy sailors taken into custody by Tehran after their two boats drifted into Iranian waters "is being resolved," a leading Iranian official said, indicating they could be set free as early as Wednesday.
"Investigation shows that entry of American sailors into Iran's territorial waters was due to mechanical problems in their navigation system," Gen. Ali Fadavi, Navy chief of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, was quoted as saying on Iran's state TV. U.S. officials had said on Tuesday that Tehran assured them the crew and vessels would be returned safely and promptly. Earlier Wednesday, Fadavi said the American boats had shown "unprofessional acts" for 40 minutes before being picked up by Iranian forces after entering the country's territorial waters.

The U.S. detainees included nine men and one woman, who were being held overnight at an Iranian base on Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf. They were expected to be transferred Wednesday to a U.S. ship in the region. "US naval force and their frigate showed an unprofessional behavior and had air and naval moves for 40 minutes in the area," Fadavi said at one point. He said Tehran did not consider the U.S. Navy boats violating Iranian territorial waters as "innocent passage." "Certainly US presence in Persian Gulf and their passage has never been innocent and we do not deem their passage as innocent," he said.

Fadavi said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif "had a firm stance" during a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry "on their presence in our territorial waters and said they should not have come and should apologize." "This process is underway now and will not last long. The Guard naval force will carry out orders of top commanders regarding this case as soon as we receive them," he said. Gen. Ramezan Sharif, spokesman for the Guard, said the U.S. military personnel were to be debriefed.

Iran frees US sailors held in Gulf - state television
13 Jan.`16 - Iran's Revolutionary Guards have released 10 US sailors held for entering its territorial waters in the Gulf, state television reported. They were detained on Tuesday after one of their two vessels broke down during a training mission, the US says.
A statement read on state media said the group was released into international waters after apologising. It comes at a sensitive time, as the US and Iran try to implement the deal on Iran's nuclear activities. A US official confirmed the sailors' release to the Reuters news agency. The incursion was "unintentional", a statement from the Revolutionary Guards quoted by state media said.

Earlier, the naval commander of the Guards, General Ali Fadavi, said investigations found a navigational failure was to blame. "We have concluded that passage of Americans in our territorial waters was not a hostile passage or for espionage or similar acts," he told Iranian television.

Iran-US relations pass a test: Jonathan Marcus, BBC diplomatic correspondent

The tentative and still largely potential softening of relations between Washington and Tehran in the wake of the nuclear deal seems to have passed a delicate initial test. The Tehran authorities have quickly accepted that the US patrol boats strayed into their waters by accident and the crews - according to Iranian State Television - have now been released. The process to begin lifting the sanctions imposed on Iran due to its nuclear activities is expected to get under way at the end of this week.

The USA would probably want an apology if the situation were reversed. I'm not going to sweat it too much unless they start asking for more groveling on top of this apology demand.

Good one. LMAO.

Barry could have broken his neck getting to that podium. We all know how he likes to apologize for the US of A.

Maybe next time. LOL

Does anybody doubt that Kerry and Barry Hussein will apologize?

He's in the meeting room now with his military advisors and Democrat party heads begging them....please pretty please let me do a grand Rose Garden apology to Islam!!! He may end up doing it anyway....but the Dems and military are all telling him it's a bad idea (for different reasons of course).

The story the Obama administration is telling about this couldn't possibly be true. There's no way all four engines on those boats could have gone out at the same time, and one could easily tow the other. What probably happened is that the Iranians encroached Saudi waters and kidnapped the sailors. Obama, in his usual craven fashion, doesn't want to pass off the Iranians, so he's lying about what happened.
