In between proposals for higher taxes on rich, more free stuff and climate change, Barry also said that we need to "protect our children from cyber terrorism". IMO, whenever government say they wanna protect us from something, we better watch out. The only thing they're protecting is themselves so we don't find out what they're doing.
They just drafted a Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, that on surface is an anti-hacking act, but when you dig deeper, you may find out that law would make it illegal for any journalist or anyone else to receive documents from whisleblowers or other unofficial sources. They make receiving those kind of documents illegal, they're making access to information that expose government illegal. Those things are important to journalism and to the public.
This law also propose any form of encryption so the government can have a back door to anything we're doing on computers. I think that Forbes recently called it "cyber police state". So how that is gonna protect us? No, the law would protect their own ass by making sure that any accountability, any investigative journalism, any whisleblowing, any person that is trying to make government accountable will be fined and thrown in jail.
Yeah, we need to make internet public utility and give government control over that.
The worse part is, this will come sooner or later. If this proposed law gets rejected, they gonna wrap it under another name and into some other law and pass it anyways.
