President Obama was right. Credit where credit is due

Duke University caved. Was ARE a nation of Islamophobes. Sure, my conservative friends will blast me for this, but the truth is the truth. What the heck was wrong with Duke playing the call to prayer to meet the religious beliefs of their Muslim student population? What is meant when I hear "to do it so close to the Paris attacks"? What do the Paris attacks have to do with Muslim students who like the idea of being able to hear the call to prayer once a week as is standard in their religion?
How would the Christian students feel if they were told that bell ringing at mass would not be allowed once a week on Sunday?
Sorry folks. I see no issue with the University catering to their Muslim students wishes as it pertains to their religion. It should have absolutely no affect on the other students...unless the call to prayer gives them reason to think they are going to be attacked...which would make them Islamophobes.
Of course, I stand corrected if, in fact, Duke University STOPPED any bell ringing for mass...but my guess is they do every Sunday.

The calls to prayer are typically 5 times a day, compared to bell ringing on Sunday, and the occasional 5 PM bell ringing weekdays.

It is also far longer, and more a broadcast of faith then the pealing of a bell.

Would Christians be allowed to scream JESUS IS TEH AWESOME for 5 minutes?

It is not a tenet of Christianity for Christians to scream Jesus is the Awesome for 5 minutes.

The call to prayer is one of the tenets of the religion.

Prayer 5 times a day is one of the pillars, the call itself is not. It is more of a cultural thing depending on the Branch of Islam in question. There is a dispute between Shia and Sunni if the adhan was from Mohammed himself or one of his successors.

The Duke bells ring every day.

Duke was also founded by Methodists and Quakers.

"(CNN)Duke University has reversed its decision to allow a Muslim call to prayer to sound from a campus chapel bell tower, school officials announced Thursday."

Does that mean President Obama was wrong?

I found this interesting.

"The objection should not be to the call to prayer, per se, so long as Duke rings an Angelus bell, but to the blatant, school sponsored proselytizing that it is permitting by making the call also in English. Something that is not done in mosques in the United States…

This is not a mere call to prayer for Muslims, it is active call to become a Muslim. It is no different than a Christian exhortation to attend church.

If Duke permitted the Lord’s Prayer or 23d Psalm to be announced from the Chapel Bell Tower you can bet the nutcases at the Freedom From Religion Foundation and commies at the ACLU would be squirting blood from their ears. But they won’t. Because they know that Christians will accept they abuse and Muslims will chop their pointy little heads off.

I’m not entirely convinced that the call to prayer is entirely different than ringing the bells in a Christian chapel. I mean, it’s not as if you’re going to mistake those for an invitation to the bake sale. But it’s clearly true that it’s more overt to be sure. But for a different slant on Duke’s decision to do this, we might ask if they need togo back and review their charter, as emblazoned on a plaque in the main quad of West Campus.

The aims of Duke University are to assert a faith in the eternal union of knowledge and religion set forth in the teachings and character of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; to advance learning in all lines of truth; to defend scholarship against all false notions and ideals; to develop a Christian love of freedom and truth; to promote a sincere spirit of tolerance; to discourage all partisan and sectarian strife; and to render the largest permanent service to the individual, the state, the nation, and the church. Unto these ends shall the affairs of this University always be administered."

Duke University to broadcast Muslim call to prayer on Fridays Update Duke reverses Hot Air

IMHO if the school rings the bell for a Christian Sermon or Mass, they should also allow for the Muslim call to prayer.

Duke is a Private school so basically they can do what the hell they want to.
I agree with you. If they ring bells, they should allow for the call to prayer.
But public outcry gave them reason to not do it for fear of damaging their reputation.
That is why I am saying Obama is correct. People do not see it as Islamic Terrorists....they see it as Islam is evil.
Its a problem.

I don't really agree with that. People are tired of different rules where Christianity and Judaism are scorned while other religions get to do what they can't, particularly Islam.

Actually, the point is to have the same "rules" for all religions.

Even, or especially those with whom you disagree.

That's great! I'm glad you're not with the Democrats and the left on that. Now start vocally advocating it to people on your own side and you'll start to have some credibility on that. Actually, it would be the first credibility you have on anything.

So go get em tiger, take it to the left we should have the same rules for all.
