The problem is it takes only one parent to "care", get all butthurt (i know, a bad joke) about it, complain, and get the teacher, the principal, and the school board in trouble.

it used to be that it would take a significant group of people to be offended by something to have it result in consequences. Now one tightwad parent can make enough noise, and scare enough spineless burecrats to make knuckling under a preferrable strategy, as opposed to telling the hyper-sensitive person to fuck off.
