Poll: 71% shun GOP handling of debt crisis

The more interesting stats show how CBS cooks the books with the weighting in their poll internals:

It would seem the people have a better understanding of the Framers’ original intent than House republicans, as it is Congress’ responsibility to address fiscal issues addressing matters of governmental funding, not the Executive’s.

It would seem you are a clueless moron who does not understand the meaning of the word "veto".

Fortunately this nation is not governed by push polls.

The GOP is right. IF we raise taxes we will not only not lower the deficit (because raising taxes never lowers the deficit), but we will hobble a bad economy to make it even worse.
Personally I think the GOP ought to just vote "present" on any proposal the Dems make, assuming they are capable of making them, let the economy tank completely and the Dems own the economy in time for 2012.
Of course this is what the Dems are most scared of, responsibility.

If President Obama raised taxes by the largest amount in history if unemployment were over 10%, what would you say to that? Incompetent? Dangerous? Foolish?

So stupid only Democrats could come up with it.

The question was "Do you approve or disapprove of the way Republicans in Congress are handling the current negotiations on the debt ceiling?" with no follow up questions regarding various proposals for spending cuts or tax increases.

In other words it was a loaded question.

Now, what does the poll tell us?

Well, that isn't the conclusion drawn. All we know is a percentage of respondents didn't like the way the Republicans were handling the debt crisis. They didn't say why. Do they want a deal or do they want the GOP to walk away and leave Obama hanging and fending for himself?

My guess it's a mixture of both.

The truth is most Republican voters don't trust Obama so they don't want a deal of any kind because they feel Obama won't honor it. One thing is for certain, Obama has less then half of the respondents supporting his actions.....even when he's only been involved in negotiations for a couple of weeks. Imagine if he had been involved all along.

Seems whenever anyone tries........their poll numbers plummet. Now that Obama is finally getting his hands dirty his numbers are falling.

hey!! no fair actually reading the Poll Mud... you're supposed to parrot the title and just move along.........

agreed. in fact looking at that entire poll, Q by Q theres a number of different ways to read it........

I do however agree, obama right now is to an extent winning the spin war.

Obama hasn't been in the game long enough to get that assessment. I think the press wants us to think that. What I see is people are fed up with all of them....including Obama.

Interesting. Does the term TEFRA ring a bell?

Politics, Not Economics, Drives Anti-Tax Stand: Albert Hunt - Bloomberg

There is no such confusion when it comes to taxes. With enforcers such as the anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist looking over their shoulders, Republican politicians know that if they even entertain the idea of higher taxes, they throw away any national ambitions, may be threatened in a primary, and, if in a position of leadership, face a revolt from the rank and file.

The political hero for these conservatives is Reagan, who did slash taxes his first year as president. What the Eric Cantors of the world don’t know or ignore is that in 1982 -- in the midst of what was then the worst economic downturn since the Depression -- Reagan approved the largest peacetime tax increase in history. On Sept. 3, 1982, the day he signed the tax hike, the jobless rate was 10.1 percent.

In today’s dollars, TEFRA (The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibilities Act) and an accompanying small increase in gas taxes would have raised the equivalent of almost $1 trillion dollars over 10 years.

The result: the economy boomed in 1983 and 1984, and that year, Reagan successfully ran for re-election on the theme of “Morning in America.” (Reagan also approved three more major tax increases, starting with higher Social Security levies in 1983).

Though I have a strong feeling if President Reagan was alive today, he'd be considered a "RINO" by someone like yourself.

Why not just link to the numbers here? Not like CBS was hiding them.

I find it hilarious though that you mock some posters for linking Dailykos but you're linking a site called the Conservative Commune.

Poll: 71% shun GOP handling of debt crisis - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Americans are unimpressed with their political leaders' handling of the debt ceiling crisis, with a new CBS News poll showing a majority disapprove of all the involved parties' conduct, but Republicans in Congress fare the worst, with just 21 percent backing their resistance to raising taxes.

President Obama earned the most generous approval ratings for his handling of the weeks-old negotiations, but still more people said they disapproved (48 percent) than approved (43 percent) of what he has done and said.

Even half of the Republican respondents (51 percent) voiced disapproval of how members of their own party in Congress are handling the talks. Far fewer Democrats expressed disapproval of their own party's handling (32 percent) or President Obama's (22 percent) of the urgent quest to raise the nation's debt limit ahead of a looming default on Aug. 2 if action isn't taken.

Sixty-six percent of those polled said they believe an agreement will be reached before the Aug. 2 deadline, while only 31 percent say it's unlikely.

Thoughts USMB?

CBS news? :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Highly doubtful.

Changing history after the fact won't work.

are you disputing the numbers Modbert and what they mean?

I never said they weren't the same numbers. In fact, the link you gave is the same exact one I gave.

All I was asking is why was it necessary to post to a blog when the numbers themselves are on the CBS website.

 Lack of reading comprehension on your part I see.

heeerrree we go....

IF YOU had read the poll, BEFORE you posted it, you would have seen that hey, theres may be something fishy here......yes?

For someone that can't read the poll composition numbers, that is a pretty worthless statement on your part.

Quoting stupid poll numbers proves only that the Dems have more media support.

The Dems have nothing to offer. No specifics. The Republicans make an offer and Obama fucks around and gives them nothing. Then when the Repugs decide it's time to go around a stonewalling President they receive nothing but insults.

My guess is the White House doesn't want a deal. If they did they would shut their yap. They feel that the the GOP is full of incompetent and scared pussies. The White House shows no respect for them. Why should the Repugs show any for the White House then. These are the facts. Yet this poll is supposed to be an accurate representation of the mood of the people.

Problem being the people haven't a clue.

What I would like is for the people to be a fly on the wall of any negotiations.

Let them know what's really going on.

I'm not disputing the numbers. I'm just pointing out that it was funny she went all the way to a Conservative blog instead of just clicking on the CBS website.

Independents widely think that both parties are doing a terrible job of handling this crisis.

What I found most interesting about this poll is how much Republicans who were polled disapproved of what the GOP was doing. It's like I said earlier in the thread, I can't blame them. They have a prime opportunity to push Democrats for cuts, and you have Republicans like Mitch McConnell trying to get rid of that opportunity intentionally in the name of politics.

 All you got in return is a insult when you clearly mess up. Still going to try and call me a hack for posting the same exact link as you?

I can clearly read the poll composition numbers by the way.

Never heard of checking a story with a different source huh? Why am I NOT surprised?

You were more interested in insulting than what the numbers actually meant. When confronted with it, we got your usual crap. Yep, your a hack.
