Police Union Tells Obama To Shut Up

Obama is the One Who 'Acted Stupidly'
By Bob Weir

From the moment a police officer dons that uniform, he/she becomes a symbol of authority, and it becomes obvious very quickly that most people in a free country resent authority. It could be the guy who gets pulled over for speeding or passing a red light; it could be the guy who's clobbering his wife during a family dispute, or it could be a guy who breaking into a residence that turns out to be his.

Although these are situations in which the police must take action, their authority will usually be resented. It's the type of job in which you are damned if you do, and damned if you don't. When a neighbor called police to the Cambridge, Massachusetts neighborhood next to Harvard University, she said there were two men breaking into a home. Sergeant Jim Crowley, a sixteen year veteran of police work, took the call and arrived at the scene to discover that the door had been jimmied and two men were inside.

It turned out later that it was Henry Gates, a Harvard professor, and his chauffer. Unfortunately for Sgt. Crowley, Gates did not have his name and address tattooed to his forehead. Therefore, it became necessary for the sergeant to ask him to show his identification.

What ensued from that moment is something that any veteran cop can relate to. This professor, evidently indignant about being questioned by a mere public servant, launched into a tirade that included references to the cop's mother and charges of racism.

In addition, it was reported that Gates made insinuations about his political influence. When he asked the officer if he knew who he's "messin' with," it was a likely reference to his friendship with President Obama.

So, here we have a case of a man who lost his keys to his house, broke in through a rear door and then became indignant when police responded to a report of a burglary and had the temerity to ask him to identify himself. When he was asked to step outside to speak with the officer, this Harvard-educated, "learned" professor said: "I'll speak with your mama outside!"

Such trash talk is generally confined to inner-city ghettos, not upscale areas which are often targeted by burglars. Is it any wonder that the cop doubted he was talking to a prominent citizen and respectable member of the community?

The fact that the cop is white and the professor is black made this a dream scenario for an opportunist to scream racism. Gates, who is reportedly working on a documentary about racism in America, apparently seized the moment as an excellent way to grab publicity for his upcoming project.

Keep in mind that the actions of the sergeant were thoroughly investigated by the Professional Standards Unit of the Cambridge PD and found to be in accordance with proper police protocol. If that cop had not followed procedure, and it turned out later that the house had in fact been burglarized, he could have been fired.

Speaking as a veteran cop (retired), who has effected more than 500 felony arrests in my 20 years with NYPD, I can tell you that Sergeant Crowley must be very tolerant indeed to have taken so much abuse from Gates before putting the cuffs on him. If it had been me, not only would he have been arrested sooner, but those manacles would have secured his arms behind his back, not in front, as Crowley did, once again being overly tolerant with this arrogant agitator.

If anyone is a racist in this confrontation, it is this obstreperous professor who evidently feels that his loft academic status and his friendship with Obama not only put him above the law, but give him a platform to inject "color" into every situation. Make no mistake about it, if Crowley were black and followed the same protocol, Gates would have recognized that there was no opportunity for a public spectacle, so he would have behaved properly.

Speaking of behavior, President Obama showed his own lack of class and judgment when he said the Cambridge PD "acted stupidly." To make such a sweeping statement of condemnation after admitting that he didn't "know all the facts," is beneath the dignity of his high office.

For a black man who has achieved the level of Chief Executive in a country where the overwhelming majority of voters are white to use that tired old canard about everything being racist, is stunningly contemptible. If this is the type of judgment Obama uses to make decisions, God help us if he's able to pass any more legislation.

Well said Detective Weir!!

This isn't news, this is mere partisan hackery trying to show that Obama is evil. Honestly, if someone sneezed around Obama and he said bless you instead of god bless you, are you going to post about that too? :eusa_eh:

If someone sneezed around Obama, how do you know he wouldn't say "God damn you".

The police union press conference this morning was fascinating!

They are taking a very strong collective stance against the president. At least one of the officers on the scene during this Gates debacle was Black. Dispatch was able to hear Gates yelling at the officers almost the entire time - the guy was off his rocker. It appears the Cambridge police were acting well within their authority to arrest this guy - they were simply asking for proof of identity when Gates went off.

Obama has made this a national issue that continues to cycle in the news and it is blowing up in his face BIG TIME. He has come off immature and prone to jumping to conclusions - playing the race card at the presidential level.

Another tough week for the Obama White House...

I would be amazed if there is not a tape of the entire event especially since the police department itself was so quick to jump on the side of their officer. After Obama's comment being so negative against the officer there would have to be a lot of evidence other than "he said" "he said" for that department to support their officer. The public will never hear the tape.

This will continue to smack Obama around - and deservedly so.

During that police union press conference they demanded an apology from the president , not just for the Cambridge police officers, but ALL police officers.

There is now growing speculation that the question posed at the end of the Obama press conference by the Chicago news reporter was a plant intended to create white guilt sympathy for Obama as his health care reform teeters on the brink of total disaster.

This one is really blowing up in his face.

The White House attempted to state - incorrectly, that the police union had endorsed McCain.

NOT TRUE. The national police union in fact endorsed Obama. This was pointed out to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs this morning by a reporter. Gibbs then conceded, "We got some."

It would appear then that Gibbs knew this fact but attempted to lie about it - then was actually called on it by the media.

This story continues to grow by the hour...

Weir and people of his ILK should never be a police officer...It is the Weirs of this world that ARE the problem...

obama wasn't there and he strongly implied the sergeant is a racist, but that's okay, right?

I don't believe Obama implied Jim Crowley is a racist, he stated a FACT that racial profiling still exists...

Here's a excerpt from an article written by Andra Gillespie, an assistant professor of political science at Emory University.

"We love Obama when he is delivering “tough love” to black people at home and abroad. But do we love him when he turns the spotlight on systemic practices, implicates core American values and institutions and reveals that we have not completely shed our racist past?"

well, you're free to believe what you want, but i disagree. to say that the subtext of obama's remarks after deploring crowley's actions isn't at least implying he's a racist is disingenuous, imo.
the salient point is that obama knows no more about what happened than weir, and yet you're fine with obama but read things into weir's article that aren't there.

Obama jumped on his black friend's band wagon without knowing the facts. He admitted he didn't know the facts before he even said it was stupid for the Cambridge Police to make the arrest. Short of calling our dear President a racist (like Rev. Wright is) I'll just say that it wasn't very Presidential now was it? I think there is plenty of proof in this pudding as to where Obama's thoughts really are. I bet if you do the research, Obama is related to Charlie Bass too. In his comments about the incident this afternoon, Obama tap danced all around this issue and said everything except "I'm sorry." He even tried to make light of the incident towards the end of his comments with that stupid having them both to the White House for a beer. I think his comments were very insincere and meaningless. He wouldn't have said anything if there wasn't an outrage going on throughout the country over this. Obama has shown us all his true hand with this incident and how he thinks. To ignore this fact, or make light of it, will show your true beliefs too.

i did- i even did a search for "uppity" and "nigg*r"
didn't find either.
what single word is it that i'm reading volumes into? i believe i referred to his statement in total, not a specific word.
why don't you repost weir's article again and highlight the parts where he says "uppity nigg*r" for me? as far as i can tell, they exist only in your mind.

The asshole confirms hes racist.

Funny... I was going to say the same thing about you.

Why?
Because I don't use politically correct words and speak my mind?
Much like Gate did ....
You don't know anything about me so being judgemental and accusing me of being tells me slot about you!
Thanks

Bob Weir isn't acting stupidly, he IS stupid...Weir wasn't there, but what he's saying is that Professor Gates is an uppity n_gger that needs to be punished and respect AUTHORITY

F Him!

Weir and people of his ILK should never be a police officer...It is the Weirs of this world that ARE the problem...

obama wasn't there and he strongly implied the sergeant is a racist, but that's okay, right?
all this after he ADMITTED he knew nothing about the case?

well, you're free to believe what you want, but i disagree. to say that the subtext of obama's remarks after deploring crowley's actions isn't at least implying he's a racist is disingenuous, imo.
the salient point is that obama knows no more about what happened than weir, and yet you're fine with obama but read things into weir's article that aren't there.

Come on del, let's get REAL here...you are reading volumes into a single WORD Obama said and totally ignoring Weir's article that is laced with calling Gates an uppity n_gger that he would have punished for daring to question authority...

Why don't you READ Weir's article...

i did- i even did a search for "uppity" and "nigg*r"
didn't find either.
what single word is it that i'm reading volumes into? i believe i referred to his statement in total, not a specific word.
why don't you repost weir's article again and highlight the parts where he says "uppity nigg*r" for me? as far as i can tell, they exist only in your mind.

Obama's almost-apology is creating smirks abroad.

He appears incapable of actually owning up to his wrongdoing in this situation.

His surprise appearance at the daily press briefing today also assured this story will be THE story in this weekend's news cycle - a cycle that will diminish Obama, especially if the tapes come out showing just how abusive Gates was toward the officer.

By the way, a Hispanic officer on the scene fully supported Officer Crowley's version.

President Obama involved himself first hand in the act of playing the race card - and did so in response to what might very well have been a staged question from a Chicago reporter at the end of his press conference. The act has backfired and he is clearly scrambling to recover...
