There's no solution to this, just permanent periodic flare ups. The Palestinians were offered '67 borders and said no, and they really just want Israel, and its 1st world economy, to go away. Saudi Arabia might get more involved if an oil patch was discovered under Ramallah, but otherwise they just stay out of it.

The periodic flare ups of intifatahs, rocket launches, suicide bombs, etc, has gone on for 30 years, and will go for at least another 30 with no solution. The crazy right wing Jews aren't leaving the West Bank in spite of being a small fraction of the population, and the foolish West Bank Palestinians aren't giving up their dreams of taking over Tel Aviv and Haifa in spite of the growing Jewish population in Israel.

All these "flare ups", are a direct result of the occupation. End that and you end the violence.

As far as the big picture goes, that area remains stuck in the same finger-pointing cycle it has been for a long time. If you and I are discussing an answer, I sure as hell don't have it. But the answer will have to include Palestinians getting an acceptable amount of land to themselves and Israel getting some acceptable amount of security. I'm not holding my breath on that, are you?

This area has been a center of violence and conquest for 3000 years (going back to Judah and the Israelites setting Jerusalem as their capital), it's changed hands through violence so many times that it's hard to keep track, the Babylonians, the Romans, Arabic Muslims, European Christians, the Ottomans, the British, etc..,etc.., have all gotten a piece of the bloodshed action. The Palestinians have no special claim to this land nor were they paragons of virtue when it came to dealing with minority cultures and religions during their dominance of the area.

Again are you referring Israel proper or just the occupied territories? If it's Israel proper you don't have much of a leg to stand on, if it's the occupied territories then your point is legitimate, however the Palestinian dispute isn't limited to occupied territories they want the whole enchilada and have been using organized violence to attempt to achieve their goals since the get go, so as I originally pointed out this barbarity is of BOTH sides making.

Good, I'm glad you are not disputing Israel's right to exist, I don't disagree on the legality of the occupied territories (although Gaza no longer falls into that category) and I think East Jerusalem is not as clear cut given that dividing a city into multiple parts doesn't make a whole heck of a lot of sense.

As far as how the Israeli's are acting, just ask yourself how we in the United States would act (or should I say have acted) if the Native Americans pursued organized attacks on civilian targets on the breadth and the scale that the Palestinians have in order to assert there territorial claims and then throw in having sympathetic neighboring nations initiating attacks to wrest away control of the country. I suspect we'd probably behave a lot like the Israeli's have ...... .
