In this recipe they sub in raw sunflower seeds.

They also state you can sub in cashews, walnuts or almonds.

I had no idea...but I'm going to try it sometime this weekend.

If it works I'll be harvesting more black walnuts next year.

Sounds like something Euell Gibbons would eat.

I can't eat any nuts, but sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds are okay. I'm going to try some pumpkin seed pesto one of these days.

I've used walnuts for pesto. The key thing that makes a pesto a pesto is the basil, and the pecorino romano/paragiano reggiano.

We've been swapping out pistachios for the pine nuts(seeds) for years now. Seemed a natural option (and cheaper)

Well...why didn't you tell me?

It never occurred to me to try anything else.

We've tried the walnuts when have no pistachios, and it works/tastes good as well.
Not sure if the almonds would work for my tastebuds though.
I love cashews so that could also be an option to consider.

Next item would be if these should be raw, or roasted(salted) ?

Another factor to consider is which type of basil. IRCC there are about 4-5 types one can get seeds for, maybe 2-3 types in the market, especially Asian. So if you garden, there's something else to harvest.

I always used Walnuts, which is what was handy. Basil I used to have growing as a window plant. I used the pesto with ranch dressing to make a great salad dressing.

That just sounds delicious.

Going to try that.

IMO pesto and pine nuts are a perfect combination....with cashews is very good too....

For me that's an ideal combination....I wouldn't ask for more I wouldn't change it!
