Why would this surprise anyone given the level of vitriol generated during the campaign? after all both candidates were painted by the opposition as Lucifer clones and the media constantly fed into fears that the world was going to end if the other sides candidate won.

Fortunately those confused individuals running around acting like 4 year olds on crack have never demonstrated any follow through on anything so I doubt this will last, heck I'd say it's a safe bet that half of 'em didn't even bother to vote.

While I believe you're right, I always hold out a bit of hope. Who knows, maybe the one thing that will end the decline is a massive shock to the system like this. While I'm not a fan of tossing hand grenades into things - they tend to cause collateral damage - maybe both whacked-out ends will wake up now.
